The LSU AgCenter and Ascension Parish Master Gardener Association will host a Louisiana Master Gardener training class. The class curriculum is composed of approximately 40 hours of coursework, which includes presentations from LSU AgCenter agents and specialists, field trips and hands-on labs. While some details are still being finalized, the class is scheduled to begin August 18 and will run into the first week of November. Classes will be held Wednesday morning from 9:00 am - noon. The program fee is $175.00.
Designed to recruit and train volunteers, the Louisiana Master Gardener Program is open to anyone with a willingness to learn and a desire to help others. Instructional training for the Louisiana Master Gardener program is tailored for beginning and experienced gardeners. In exchange for horticulture training, Master Gardeners contribute time as volunteers by working through their parish extension office to develop and enhance community outreach programs related to home horticulture. Depending on community needs, these may include environmental improvement activities, local fairs and festivals, plant health clinics, civic meetings, maintenance of demonstration gardens, and community and school gardening programs. Examples of Master Gardener volunteer activities in Ascension Parish include assisting with school gardens, a horticulture library lecture series held in the spring and fall, maintaining landscape beds at Lamar Dixon Expo Center and Kidz Kove Park and a vegetable demonstration garden.
