The Ascension Parish LSU AgCenter and the Ascension Master Gardener Association will again host a Vegetable Garden Contest for 4-H youth, schools and adults. The contest is held to encourage gardeners to produce quality vegetables for home consumption and economic gain.

Gardens eligible for participation must contain at least four different types of vegetables and be located in Ascension Parish. Gardens can be entered into the adult large, adult small, youth large, youth small, or school category. Small gardens include containers, raised beds and one row gardens. Large gardens include gardens of two or more rows.

All gardens will be judged in person by Ascension Master Gardeners in early May. Judging will be based on site selection, record keeping, apparent productivity, and weed, disease and insect pressure. More details can be found by viewing the score card example. Youth gardens should be primarily maintained by the 4-H member.

To enter the contest or for more information contact LSU AgCenter Horticulture Agent Mariah Simoneaux or call the Ascension Parish LSU AgCenter Office by Friday, April 16.
