This Update is to provide details about the upcoming strawberry grower meeting and let you know about a several other upcoming events and a new resource.
Workers (other than owners and immediate family members) on farms that grow fruit, vegetable, nursery, or other crops are generally required to have WPS training each year before beginning work in the field (more information, click here). The training must be provided by someone who has a pesticide license AND has completed WPS train-the-trainer training. Because of updates to WPS regulations, those who have not had WPS Train-the-Trainer training since November 2016 need to attend in order to continue providing WPS training.
The LSU AgCenter Pesticide Safety Education Program will offer a WPS Train-the-Trainer training on Tuesday, July 16, from 9 AM till noon. It costs $25. If you need this training, please contact Bryan Gueltig to get a registration form.
This event is a chance for those in the nursery and landscaping industry to get LSU AgCenter research updates related to landscape plants, turfgrass, nursery production, and related topics. Click here for more information. Contact Dr. Jeb Fields with questions.
We will hold a meeting for commercial strawberry growers on the afternoon (1 - 4:30 PM) of Wednesday, July 31, at the Hammond Research Station. Like last year, we will connect with Dr. Natalia Peres for a question-and-answer session about Pestalotia leaf spot and fruit rot management updates. One of the LSU School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences' new precision agriculture faculty members, Dr. Congliang Zhou, will discuss possible applications of precision agriculture in strawberry production, a topic related to work he did while at University of Florida. Clark Robertson will discuss strawberry irrigation and frost protection, and I will address strawberry fertilization. More information about the meeting is available here.
