- St. Helena Farmers Market moves to new location
GREENSBURG, La. — The St. Helena Farmers Market has officially moved to a new location.
“This location is the prime place to host a market,” said Aulton Cryer, of Cryer’s Family Produce, a vendor at the St. Helena Farmers Market. “It is more visible to the customers. Business has increased since the move, and the community is able to enjoy more homegrown fruits and vegetables.”
The market, which operates every Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., is now located at the corner of Sitman Street and state Route 10 in Greensburg, Louisiana. The market was previously held in the lot next to Double R Hometown Hardware, just a couple of blocks away.
“The new location has more space for customers and vendors,” said Marquetta Anderson, LSU AgCenter extension agent and St. Helena Healthy Communities Coalition facilitator. “We’re going from only having room for about five parked cars and five vendors to having space for up to 12 parked cars and 15 vendor booths.”
In the past year, the market has seen an average of about 35 customers per market day. In the first two weeks since the move, the market saw 65 customers on the first day and 83 customers on the second day.
The market hopes to continue to attract more customers and vendors at the new location, which is more centrally located in the town and easily accessible to travelers on state Route 10. Applications for new vendors are currently being accepted.
“The new location is more visible. There is more parking, and it is walking distance from my job,” said customer Cynthia Myles.
In July 2020, the market launched a SNAP match program that offers $3 in free tokens for every $1 spent on eligible foods using SNAP/EBT benefits.
“We wanted to make the market as accessible as possible to a wide variety of customers and vendors,” said Makenzie Miller, extension agent for LSU AgCenter Healthy Communities. “We hope that this new location, in addition to the SNAP match program, makes everyone in the community feel welcome.”
The St. Helena Farmers Market operates through a partnership between the LSU AgCenter, Southern University Ag Center and St. Helena Healthy Communities Coalition.
