The 2nd Annual Produce Growers Meeting was held at the Northeast Research Station in St. Joseph, LA on February 13, 2026.This program was organized by area Horticulture Agent Marcie Wilson in 2025 as an effort to address top issues for local produce growers and farmers market vendors. The program was a success in 2025 where attendees learned best practices for farmers market vending, growing tomatoes and sweet potatoes in the home garden, as well as cottage food laws from LSU AgCenter Extension specialists and agents Dr. Cole Gregorie, Makenzie Miller, Dr. Shannon Coleman and Marcie Wilson. The 2026 agenda included topics addressing home production of watermelons (Marcie Wilson), raised bed culture (Dr. Christine Coker), home garden pest best management (Dr, Aaron Ashbrook), food preservation (Quincy Vidrine), produce washing best practices (Dr. Achyut Adhikari) , and farmers market culture and success (Chris Richmond).Attendees left with free seeds from the North Louisiana Seed Preservation Program to kick off their spring gardens. Plans are in place to hold the next Produce Growers Meeting in February 2027 with topics reflecting issues reported from local growers and vendors through assessment surveys.
