Relevance

Louisiana’s cattle industry is a vital component of the state’s agricultural economy. In 2023:

  • $640.1 million in beef production
  • 527,078 in cow herd inventory
  • 530,557 head of cattle marketed
  • 10,950 farms and ranches
  • Cattle raised in 63 parishes

Developing replacement heifers is crucial for maintaining herd productivity and profitability. However, small to mid-sized producers often face land and resource limitations that hinder their ability to develop their own replacements. The Geaux Beef Heifer Development Program was created to support these producers with expert-guided, forage-based heifer development.

  • 2021-2022: 50 heifers from 8 producers
  • 2022-2023: 75 heifers from 15 producers
  • 2023-2024: 75 heifers from 15 producers
  • 2024-2025: 72 heifers from 15 producers

Economic Value

  • $54,568 in collective economic impact over three years
  • $1,800-$3,000 market value per heifer post-program

Cost-effective Development

  • Total average cost: $312 per heifer (October-April)
  • Includes feed, hay, minerals, forage and fertilizer
  • Excludes breeding, vaccines and medications
