Orleans Parish EFNEP: 2024 Outcome Report

Since 1969, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program has educated limited-resource families and youth in Louisiana, teaching them to develop skills to make healthy changes that will lead to improved diets and nutritional well-being. Through EFNEP’s ”hands-on” approach, participants learn to make behavioral changes and improve the nutritional quality of meals for their families.

  • Is taught by peer educators who live in the communities they serve
  • Delivers research-based teaching through a series of interactive direct-education lessons
  • Partners with community agencies to improve food and physical activity environments
  • Is dedicated to reaching diverse, limited-resource populations

Orleans Parish EFNEP’s Reach in 2024

  • 792 residents participated in EFNEP educational series
  • 200 adults enrolled in nutrition education series
  • 1362 youth enrolled in nutrition education series
  • 1562 total family participants

Reaching Families

  • 0% of EFNEP adult participants reported income at or below 185% of poverty level

Health Behavior Improvements:

Adult Outreach

  • 87% improved food resource management practices
  • 93% improved diet quality
  • 67% improved physical activity behaviors
  • 80% improved food safety practices
  • 20% improved food security

Youth Outreach

  • 83% improved ability to choose foods according to the dietary guidelines
  • 55% improved physical activity practices
  • 0% acquired skills to be food secure
  • 50% improved ability to prepare simple, nutritious affordable food
  • 55% improved food safety practices

EFNEP Affecting Lives in our Parish

Upon completion of the food demonstration and tasting of the Salmon Dip, a male participant said, " I have never tasted Salmon Dip Before, it's good". He proceeded to take a recipe and mentioned he would make it at home. During the following meeting he shared with the nutrition educator that he had prepared the Salmon Dip at home for his family, and they also liked it.
