‘Red Global’

Red Global was released in 1959 and developed by Julian C. Miller, Teme P. Hernandez, and Eugene C. Tims as part of the tomato breeding program at LSU. According to Circular No. 60 ‘Red Global, A New Disease and Heat-Resistant Tomato’, this variety offers quite a bit to the home gardener: superior fall production, an alternative early variety for spring, low acid with a mild sweet flavor, compact, thick fleshy walls with few seeds and small locules. Red Global was also hailed as having some resistance to cracking, resistance to fusarium wilt and foliar diseases, and exceptional heat tolerance, making it a top pick for fall crops. Red Global is a cross of Louisiana Slicer x Gulf State Market x Marglobe backcrossed to Marglobe. It was described as a vigorous indeterminate vine producing deep globe shaped red fruit under high temperatures. It was recommended for home gardens and for commercial production as an alternative early variety. In spring trials conducted in 1958 and 1959, Red Global outyielded leading varieties of the time (Rutgers, Homestead 24, Moreton hybrid).80 days to maturity. Seed was acquired for Red Global from GRIN (PI 28659562AISD) in 2021 and grown out for seed increase in 2022 and 2023 at the Northeast Research Station, and sites in Ouachita, Tensas, and East Carroll Parishes. Red Global was a heavy and consistent producer at all sites, yielding round, deep red fruit great for slicing or canning.
