Louisiana Gulf State is an improved strain of Gulf State Market, developed by Julian C. Miller through the tomato breeding program at LSU. First appearance of this variety for purchase was in the 1938 Reuter’s seed catalog where it was described as high yielding, vigorous, wilt & crack resistant and recommended for home, market or shipping. Fruits of Louisiana Gulf State are pink and globe to slightly flattened in shape.77 days to maturity. Seeds for Louisiana Gulf State were acquired from GRIN (PI 645190) in 2022 and grown out for seed increase in 2022 and 2023 at the Northeast Research Station, and at sites in Tensas and East Carroll Parishes. Observations matched Miller’s notes on Louisiana Gulf State in fruit shape, color, plant vigor, and disease resistance. Louisiana Gulf State was a consistent producer of nice size tomatoes great for salads, slicing, or canning, making it a great variety for Louisiana home gardens.
