‘Louisiana Dixie’

Louisiana Dixie was developed by Julian C. Miller and is a cross between Louisiana Pink and Walter Richard. Louisiana Dixie first appeared for release in the 1939 Reuter’s seed catalog along with Louisiana Pink and Louisiana Gulf State. Miller described Louisiana Dixie as being a vigorous plant with deep globe, large, pink firm fruit with resistance to fusarium wilt, cracking and some resistance to early blight. Louisiana Dixie was also described as being early with few seeds and small seed cavities. It has russet streaks around the stem end before ripening on the vine and is great as a spring or fall crop.74 days to maturity. Seeds for Louisiana Dixie were acquired from GRIN (PI 644727) in 2022 and grown out for seed increase in 2022 and 2023 at the Northeast Research Station, and at sites in Tensas and East Carroll Parishes. Louisiana Dixie lived up to Miller’s description of the variety with its medium-large pink fruit, vigorous vines, and russet streaks. No disease issues were observed either year, and the vines produced a nice crop May through September. Louisiana Dixie is a great slicing tomato for both spring and fall gardens.
