‘Quickpick ’ Southern Pea

Dr. Blair Buckley took over the southern pea breeding program at the Calhoun Research Station in 1990, and continued efforts to develop bush type plants with top producing characteristics better suited for machine and hand harvesting. In 1997, Quickpick was released, a pinkeye purplehull pea with a very compact habit and pods that set simultaneously high above the canopy. Quickpick is also reported to be resistant to cowpea mosaic virus and is perfect for home or commercial use. At fresh maturity, pods are dark purple, with light green peas with a pink eye. At the dry stage, peas are cream colored with dark purple eye. Quickpick was acquired from Victory Seeds and grown out in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Quickpick is the easiest to grow and harvest among all the other LSU southern peas, and remains one of the top yielding as well, producing a second lighter crop in late summer. 60 days to maturity.
