‘Lagreen’ Southern Pea

Professor A.C. Miller took over the southern pea breeding program in 1958 and worked with his team to develop new wilt resistant varieties for southern gardens. One of those varieties was named ‘Lagreen’ (Louisiana Purchase X cross of Calhoun Crowder X Blackeye), released in 1962. Lagreen was also selected for high yields, top producing pods, easy shelling, and excellent quality. It is a light green pea in the fresh stage, and sightly wrinkled, cream, with a tan eye in the dry stage (much like Louisiana Purchase). Pods are long, puffy, and light green at fresh maturity. Lagreen was acquired from GRIN (PI 663012) and grown out in 2022 & 2023.Lagreen was incredibly productive in 2022 on only just a few hills. Seed was collected and grown out again in 2023.Again, Lagreen was incredibly high yielding, easy to harvest, and fun and easy to shell. Lagreen lives up to the qualities for which it was selected, thus comes highly recommended for home use. 63-70 days to maturity.
