This position will be based out of the School of Renewable Natural Resources on LSU’s Baton Rouge campus.
The intern will work with Dr. Garrett Hopper (Assistant Professor) on a project related to the ecology of freshwater mussels in Louisiana.
Qualified candidates will be enrolled in a degree program such as Biology, Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Environmental Sciences or a closely related major. Preferences will be given to those interested in freshwater ecosystems. There will be opportunities to assist with mussel surveys in rivers and process soft tissue and shell samples in the lab. A strong ability to swim in outdoor settings, the ability to skin dive using mask, snorkel, and weight belt and the ability to work long hours in sometimes unpleasant outdoor conditions that may include rain, high winds, rough water, heat, cold, low visibility, biting insects, snakes, and alligators are necessary for interns to participate in surveys.

The intern will assist with freshwater mussel surveys in Louisiana Rivers, process tissue and shell samples, and help with measurements of mussel excretion and egestion rates. There will be opportunities for the intern to independently develop science communication materials regarding ecosystem services that mussels proved.
The success of the intern will be measured through a complete draft of a poster detailing the ecosystem services of freshwater mussels in Louisiana. An independent research project related to the main project that results in a poster presentation. Each of the deliverables must be accompanied by an abstract.
The LSU AgCenter and the LSU College of Agriculture
