Research can involve projects in Cannabis production, evaluation of environmentally friendly anti-microbial products, community gardening in underserved populations, or other consumer horticulture related projects. Field and greenhouse management tasks include watering plants, planting, transporting pots and media, applying fertilizers, basic maintenance such as flushing filters, sweeping, and basic help with small construction projects.
Most laboratory work will be under the guidance of Dr. Kirk-Ballard, Dr. Singh for the Plant Diagnostic Lab or Dr. Liu for the medicinal plants lab and extraction work in Wilson Hall. Other mentors include graduate students Kiarah Craft, Samuel des Bordes, and Kaylee Deynzer.
Some work will include planting containers and field experiments, watering, pruning, potting, mixing soils and taking growth measurements. Recording data in excel and performing simple formulas.
The worker is responsible to secure equipment and building at the end of their shift. Additionally, office work such as data input into excel, making copies, filing papers, etc., as well as small errands to pick up irrigation, plant materials, fertilizers, chemicals, and gardening tools. May assist in extension work/talks/demonstrations.
Laboratory work can include inoculation work, work under a fume hood, work with microscopes, etc. Student will be trained on all lab procedures and equipment.
