Description of Committed Responsibilities of the Undergraduate Student Intern:

The Jr. Master Gardener Program student intern will be responsible for assisting with implementing this national program in Louisiana.

The intern will be responsible for reviewing and learning the Jr. MG Program curricula, developing models for implementation in the state, exploring methods for sharing developed materials through trainings and workshops, identifying outside funding sources to remove implementation barriers, assisting with adapting state standards for Louisiana. This experience is designed to give the intern an in-depth look at the aspects involved in coordinating the implementation of a national program at the state level.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum qualifications: Rising sophomores and juniors from LSU and partner institutions majoring in Horticulture or Agriculture and Extension Education and Evaluation (AEEE) with at least a 2.5 GPA are most competitive.
  • Preferred qualifications: Desire to serve others; excellent communication skills, high attention to detail and experience with Word, Excel, and Power Point

Number of Intern Positions: 1

Success Measure or End of Project Deliverables:

  • Assist in facilitating statewide workshop for LSU AgCenter agents, teachers, and LMG volunteers
  • Creation of marketing materials to use in emails and social media campaigns
  • Develop and maintain Jr. Master Gardener webpage, hosted on the LMG webpage (LSU AgCenter website)
  • Alignment of state education standards with JMG curricula (posted on webpage)

Primary Mentor:

Sara R. Shields, Ph.D. is state coordinator for the Louisiana Master Gardener Program, a horticultural service and educational program offered through the LSU AgCenter. Dr. Shields also serves as the Regional Horticulture Coordinator for the LSU AgCenter’s Central Region. 100% Extension.
