Advisory Leadership Council Meeting Minutes PDF

On March 3, members of the LSU AgCenter West Feliciana Family & Consumer Sciences Advisory Leadership Council met via TEAMS. Those in attendance included: Lee Coleman, Sara Wilson-Rogers, Karen Harris, Clarencia Grimes, and Cynthia Vessell-Whitaker. Layne Langley, LSU AgCenter Area Nutrition Agent, shared a power point which included information about the AgCenter including its mission and purpose. She provided a program review for FY 2020. Langley shared information on the nutrition and school gardens at Bains Lower Elementary and provided details about the outreach and projects she worked on during the “lockdown” mode during COVID. Langley went on to tell the group about the programs she offered and taught online/virtually including where and how she advertised them. She then told the group about the Healthy Communities Projects that had just been completed. Langley shared pictures of the new parklettes in Solitude and West Feliciana Community Center.

Then she opened the floor to discussion and recommendations. Here are the questions and answers provided by those members on the call.

What educational program topics could Family & Consumer Sciences (FCS) provide that would be helpful to the citizens of West Feliciana?

  • Hypertension program like Break Up with Salt that has been offered
  • Healthy eating
  • Whole family meal prep; learning how to follow a recipe, etc.

What can West Feliciana Parish FCS do to increase participation and engagement of West Feliciana citizens?

  • Offer face to face programs at the same time conducting online/virtual so participants have a choice on how they want to attend.
  • Partner with another agency who can provide incentives to attend like fruit or vegetable baskets.

What needs do the citizens of West Feliciana have as it relates to nutrition and health?

  • Parent and child exercise activities
  • Guidance on proper diet
  • Staff wellness
  • Conduct a needs assessment
  • Transportation issues in food deserts

How can I better market the FCS programs?

  • Advertise programs in the Family Service Center (FSC) newsletter
  • Ask FSC to advertise on their website
  • Word of mouth
  • Continue using Facebook
