What's in a 1/2 Cup of Fruit?

Have you ever wondered why the USDA recommends we make half our plate fruits and vegetables? It is because they are packed with vitamins and minerals to protect our health. Fruits and vegetables are low in fat, calories, and sodium. Curious about the sugars in fruits? The sugars in fruits are natural so they do not count as added sugars.

Do you know how much fruit you should consume daily? The amount depends on your age, sex, and level of physical activity. On average, you should consume anywhere from 1- 2 cups of fruits a day.

Let's see how much fruit is considered a 1 cup and a 1/2 cup serving

  • 1 cup = 1 cup pineapple chunks
  • 1 large orange
  • 1 cup 100% fruit juice
  • ½ cup dried fruit
  • 1 small apple
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 cup mixed fruit (fruit cocktail)
  • 1 medium pear
  • ½ cup= 16 grapes
  • 1 medium wedge cantaloupe
  • 1 small banana
  • 1 small orange
  • 4 large strawberries
  • 1 large plum
  • Snack container (4 ounces) pear
  • 1 small box raisins
