The Dairy Alliance has offered a challenge: Raise Your Mitt and Commit to eating at least 1 meals together each day with your family.
Why do family meals matter?
Research shows that children who eat frequent meals with their family have better nutrition, higher grades, increased self-esteem and exhibit less risky behaviors.
Even outside of the home — research shows that employees who eat together, work better together - boosting productivity, fostering friendships and making everyone happier.
However, the frequency of eating meals together has been on the decline.
Eating meals together is good for all family members. Recent studies link regular family dinners with lower rates of substance abuse, teen pregnancy and depression, as well as higher grade-point averages and self-esteem in children and young adults. (Canadian Family Physician, 2015)
According to The Hartman Group, a firm that focuses on food and beverages trends, more than half of Americans (53 percent) decide what they are going to eat for dinner within an hour of meal time.
Family meals do not need be fancy. Plan, prep and pack the pantry!The secret ingredient is eating together frequently. Frequent family meals increase self-esteem, a sense of well-being, positive social behaviors and stronger family relationships.
