Sweet Potato Fundraiser!

Boxes of cured Louisiana sweet potatoes are being sold in 10 Pound boxes for $10.

Money earned from the sale will benefit the Allen Parish 4-H Program.

  • All forms and money must be turned into the 4-H office by NOVEMBER 12th
  • Top Seller will receive $100.00 and Top Club will receive $50.00
  • The members that wish to participate will be responsible for picking them up from the 4-H Office.

Sweet Potatoes can be picked up from the 4-H Office from November 17th-19th.

Shooting Sports

Our next practice is November 4th @ 4:30

  • BB Gun Participants: You will not be participating at this practice. Your next practice will be in December
  • Competition Dates: Regional (March 7-11, March 29-11) State (April 26-May 1)
  • We are working on having a local Hunters Certification Class. Please email blafargue@agcenter.lsu.edu if your child needs this class. As of right now we do not have a date/location set.

Attention High School Seniors! Due January 25th!

The 4-H Honor Cord Award recognizes 4-H members who are graduating seniors.

For 4-H youth to receive the 4-H Honor Cord, they must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a currently enrolled 4-H member and in good standing
  • Must be a graduating senior
  • Must have been enrolled in 4-H for at least 3 years of their high school career
  • Must have participated in at least one state sponsored 4-H program in the past 3 years, or demonstrated exemplary parish-level program involvement
  • Must complete the application form by the deadline

Come join the fun for a morning of painting on a canvas. We will provide all the paint, brushes, canvas, and a local artist to give step by step instructions for completing a painting.

Cookery Contest!

Saturday November 13, 2021

  • Egg: Salad/Appetizer, Main Dish, Dessert
  • Sweet Potato: Dessert, Other
  • Pecan: Candy, Dessert, Other
  • Cup Cake Challenge: Rules: Three identical cupcakes will be submitted. Go wild and be creative! (Cannot be store bought cupcakes-must be baked by 4-H’er)

General Rules

  • The food should be exhibited in a disposable container. Food and containers will be discarded at conclusion of contest.
  • Only half of the dish / quantity of the recipe will be exhibited. The contestant may keep the other half of the dish at home for his/her family to enjoy. This saves money and reinforces safe food practices to prevent food borne illness.
  • Non-edible items are not to be used as garnish. Only traditional garnishes, parsley, peppers, lemons and tomatoes are allowed.
  • No raw eggs allowed in any category.
  • FOOD SAFETY - After preparation, the dish must be chilled to refrigerator temperature, 40 DEGREES F or LOWER. Dishes must be transported on ice and in an ice chest to the contest. Transport dishes in hard plastic coolers. DISHES NOT CHILLED AND TRANSPORTED IN THIS MANNER WILL BE DISQUALIFIED BY CONTEST OFFICIALS.
  • Each contestant needs a copy of their recipe with the contestant’s name, contestant number, parish, dish division and any other special division requirements. Please follow the rules below for the recipe to be submitted.

Recipe Evaluation

The recipe should include the following parts:

  • Name of recipe given
  • Ingredients listed in order used
  • Include size and weight of cans, packages, etc.Example:10 ¾ ounce can of cream of mushroom soup
  • No abbreviations…tablespoon, teaspoon, cup, etc. must be used
  • No ingredient brands listed on recipe. Example: Campbell’s, Karo, Kraft, etc.
  • Clear instructions for combining ingredients given
  • Size of pan stated
  • Temperature and cooking time stated
  • Number of servings given
  • Dish meets contest and division requirements

Egg Cookery Requirements

  • The egg dish must utilize a minimum of four (4) eggs. This can be four (4) whites, four (4) yolks, or four (4) whole eggs.NO RAW EGGS WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE FINAL PRODUCT.
  • The recipe with 4 eggs must make only one standard size dish. For example, a recipe with 4 eggs that makes two pies of standard size will not qualify.

Pecan Cookery Requirement

  • Dish must contain (1) cup of pecans.

Sweet Potato Cookery Requirement

1.Dish must contain (1) cup of sweet potatoes.

Chef Club!

We had a really great group of kids attend our October Chef Club! Our next meeting will be in December. In October we kept things simple. We learned about where our food comes from, made witch brooms and Fanta floats. In December I would like to move into the kitchen. In order to do this, there will be different time slots for your members to choose from. Everyone will be personally contacted. The deadline to register for this club has come to an end. We are looking forward to a great year.

ALLEN PARISH FAIR

NOVEMBER 17-20, 2021

This event is held at the Allen Parish Fair Grounds.

Every 4-H member is encouraged to enter at least one article in the fair.

The premiums:1st - $3.00; 2nd - $2.00; and 3rd - $1.00.

Entries will be taken from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, November 15 & 16.Wednesday, November 17th from 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. will be the culinary entries only.

ALLEN PARISH FAIR PARADE

Each 4-H club is encouraged to have an entry in the parade. The three categories are: Decorated Float, Decorated Car, and Marching Unit. (Note: Line up west of fair grounds @ 9:15 a.m., Friday November 19, 2021)

Outdoor Photography Camp! 7th-8th Grade

The Outdoor Photography Camp will be an overnight weekday camp held on December 6th -7th. This program will feature an introductory smartphone photography course in which participants will explore natural/outdoor photography around the grounds of Camp Grant Walker. Campers will learn about basic and intermediate photography principles, as well as tips on basic editing features using apps included or freely available on a typical smartphone.

The program fee will be $60 to attend and will be capped at 20 participants! Youth will need to be dropped off by a parent/guardian or another approved adult, which can be indicated on the registration form. Drop-off will be from 4:30-6:30 PM on Monday, December 6th, and Pick-up will be at 4:30 PM Tuesday, December 7th. Registration is currently open and will close on November 22nd.

Junior Leaders

Our next meeting will be held on November 22nd at 11:30.

If you are interested in being a Junior Leader, please make sure you have paid your dues by the November Meeting. Club shirts will be handed out at the December Meeting.

If you are interested in helping at the Clovers and Canvas workshop, please register and type in Junior Leader where it asks for club. The workshop is being held before our meeting.

For this meeting we will meet up at the 4-H Office and go over business. Bring a sack lunch to eat during our meeting. Drinks will be provided. Then we will go to the nursing home to decorate windows for the senior citizens.
