- LSU AgCenter rice field day set for June 30
(06/08/21) CROWLEY, La. —After only being allowed to meet virtually last year, rice farmers will be able to put boots on the ground at this year’s rice field day, which will be held on June 30 at the LSU AgCenter H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station.
As in past years, the program will begin with field tours from 7:15 to 9 a.m., with a poster session and a trade show running concurrently.
Topics to be discussed include:
— Rice sustainability and agronomic research
— Hybrid rice and specialty rice breeding
— Rice breeding and marker assisted breeding
— Rice weed science and pathology
— Rice entomology
The indoor program will feature updates from the rice industry and government officials and will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Speakers will include Richard Fontenot, chairman of the Louisiana rice research board, Dr. Mike Strain, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Jim Harper, president of the Louisiana Farm Bureau Federation and Betsy Ward, chief executive officer for the USA Rice Federation.
The guest speaker will be Kevin Norton, the former associate chief of the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Other speakers will include Bill Richardson, LSU AgCenter vice president for agriculture, and Mike Salassi, LSU AgCenter associate vice president for plants, soil, water and animal science.
The field day will end with a lunch featuring a Louisiana rice dish.
