- Louisiana 4-H’ers take educational awards trip
(11/28/18) BATON ROUGE, La. — Every year 4-H’ers from across the state submit records of their personal achievements and 4-H participation hoping for a chance to attend the Louisiana 4-H Educational Awards Trip.
The 20 4-H members in the seventh and eighth grades with outstanding achievement portfolios recently took the trip that included stops in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Winners are invited to explore the cities by taking tours and eating local cuisine, said LSU AgCenter youth development instructor Tanya Giroir.
“This year’s educational trip was held from Nov. 18 to 20,” Giroir said.“Delegates enjoyed lunch at Café Reconcile, a restaurant that houses a program for at-risk youth in New Orleans.”
The 4-H’ers learned about training that helps the youth enter the hospitality and restaurant industries. They also toured Mardi Gras World and the National World War II Museum.
In Baton Rouge, the 4-H’ers were treated to a Sunday dinner by sponsored by DEMCO and visited the LSU Rural Life Museum and LSU Museum of Natural Science.
Winners who attended the event are Karley Bailey, Beauregard Parish; Ethien Butts, Kelcy Hammonds and Tatum Malone, Bossier Parish; Eli Coker, Claiborne Parish; Abigail DeLoach, Robert Hubbard and Anna Gautreaux, Avoyelles Parish; Grace Esquivel, Vermilion Parish; Katie Frank and Alex Sullivan, Ascension Parish; Emma Gaudet, Livingston Parish; Mary Harris, Dason Lanclos and Billy Poirer, St. Martin Parish; Aubrie Istre, Jefferson Davis Parish; Aubrey Menard and Malory Segura, Iberia Parish; and Matea Whittington, Sabine Parish.
The trip concluded with an awards banquet held at The Club at LSU Union Square on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.
Trip sponsors included the LSU AgCenter, LSU Rural Life Museum, DEMCO, LSU Museum of Natural Science and the Louisiana 4‑H Foundation.
AgCenter 4-H agents Liz Bryan, Stephanie Gravois and Elliot Scroggs accompanied the youth on their trip.
