Flood risk awareness to be discussed at Slidell fair

(03/12/18) SLIDELL, La. The LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant are partnering with the City of Slidell during the Slidell Street Fair to talk with local residents about flood risks in the region.

The Slidell Antique Street Fair will be held in Old Town Slidell on Saturday, March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to the Slidell Museum at 2020 First St. and at the Cultural Center and Public Affairs building parking garage at the corner of First and Bouscaren Streets.

Carol Franze, AgCenter extension agent and specialist with Louisiana Sea Grant, said the purpose of the event is to make sure residents understand their risk of flooding and the importance of home and business elevations.

“Participants will be shown how to be prepared for hazards, especially flooding from tropical storm surge, and heavy rainfall, how to mitigate flooding risks, how to purchase flood insurance (costs, need, benefit), and the LaHouse Mobile Unit for building or retrofitting homes,” she said. “We will also have a fun educational game for kids to learn about flood risks.”

Speakers will be on hand from the AgCenter, Sea Grant, the City of Slidell and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
