Growing up on a farm in the French Caribbean and pursuing higher education in France and in the upper Gulf Coast region of the United States, I have participated in diverse phases of agricultural production and pest management. In my undergraduate experience, I studied nematodes, aphids and plant pathogens attacking vegetables, melons and carrot production. My graduate studies have focused on the ecology and management of insect pests in sugarcane and rice. I have published 16 peer-reviewed research articles (five senior-authored), 10 Arthropod Management Tests reports, and numerous extension publications. In addition, I participated in the writing of a nationally competitive grant proposal for the USDA CSREES IPM Crops at Risk Program ($215,390) in 2008. In 2010, I was fully involved in the writing of competitive grant proposals for the EPA Strategic Agricultural Initiative Program ($70,858) and USDA NIFA AFRI Sustainable Bioenergy Program ($999,640). All three proposals were fully funded.
My Ph.D. research focused on the Mexican rice borer, Eoreuma loftini, an invasive pest of graminaceous crops that has the potential to annually cause $250 million losses in Louisiana. I have documented that management programs must involve the interactive role of E. loftini noncrop hosts in addition to that of sugarcane and rice. Sentinel plant studies and on-farm sampling of weedy habitats in Texas rice production areas showed that noncrop hosts could play a key role in E. loftini pest population build-up and overwintering (Proc. Int. Soc. Sugar Cane Technol. 27: 806-814). Primary noncrop host relative importance throughout the seasons was also quantified (Environ. Entomol., in press). Subsequently, a greenhouse experiment compared relative oviposition and larval development of E. loftini on primary noncrop hosts and rice. Free amino acid analysis of plant tissues collected during the greenhouse study provided insights on the biochemical bases of preference and performance. Cultural practice experiments also showed that a shorter rice harvest cutting height can suppress late season E. loftini populations, and that rice stubble under favorable conditions represents an overwintering habitat in addition to non-crop hosts (Crop Prot., submitted). My research provides a foundation for a more comprehensive E. loftini management strategy. In cooperation with biological system analysts at the Texas A&M AgriLife Center at Beaumont, we are now integrating results from my research into a simulation model that will help design optimal tactics reducing E. loftini pest populations.
As part of my Ph.D. studies, I also took the lead on assessing the impact of Hurricane Rita storm surge (J. Econ. Entomol. 102: 1054-1061) and sugarcane planting dates (Fla. Entomol.: 94: 242-252) on sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis, infestations in Louisiana sugarcane. In addition, I was involved in studies addressing sugarcane cultivar resistance to aphids (Ann. Entomol. Soc. Am. 104: 699-704), insecticide resistance in D. saccharalis (J. Econ. Entomol. 101: 1903-1910), and induced resistance to the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, in conventional and transgenic cotton (Entomol. Exp. Appl. 140: 226-237). My M.S. research in Louisiana assessed on-farm efficacy of reduced-risk insecticides for D. saccharalis management in sugarcane (Crop Prot. 29: 1168-1176). In Texas, I was involved in the study of a potential biological control agent for D. saccharalis in rice (Biol. Control 56: 159-169). A substantial proportion of my research has been conducted in cooperation with county extension agents (2 were my co-authors) and producers on private land.
With numerous opportunities to share my research results with colleagues during regional and national professional meetings, I have been fortunate to be honored with four best presentation awards. I also have been invited to present my research during a symposium at the Entomological Society of America National Meeting in Reno, NV (11/18/08), and seminar series at Clemson University (10/26/09, 3/16/11), the Texas A&M AgriLife Center at Beaumont (5/27/10), and the Department of Plant Pathology at LSU (11/3/10). In addition, I often communicate my results and related recommendations to stakeholders during field days, county agent training sessions, crop consultant meetings, and also through popular articles in Louisiana Agriculture, Texas Rice and The Sugar Bulletin.
