Courses

ENTOM 7006: Advanced Inset Pest Management (Spring--Odd Years)

During the last decade, there have been numerous scientific and technological advances in insect pest management, such as use of the internet systems, global positioning systems (GPS) and geographical information systems (GIS), modeling, biotechnology, host plant resistance, biological control, as well as many discoveries of environmentally benign novel pesticide chemistries.

This course provides students with cutting edge information and knowledge related to the development and implementation of modern insect pest management tactics and strategies. The course will begin with an overview of pest management history and the ecological basis of insect pest management. Subsequent lectures will emphasize advances in major insect pest management tactics including cultural control, biological control, host plant resistance, and chemical control. Several key components of insect pest management, such as insect sampling, economic injury level (EIL), economic threshold (ET), and an introduction of system analysis and its applications in insect pest management will then be presented to underscore the quantitative aspects of insect pest management programs. Several lectures at the end of the course will focus on two novel technologies (biotechnology and GPS/GIS) and their applications in insect pest management. No comparable course exists at present at LSU.

ENTOM 7008: U.S. Agriculture and Major Agricultural Arthropod Pests (Spring-Even Years)

The major goal of the course is to help our graduate students become familiar with the U.S. agricultural systems and the major agricultural arthropod pests in the United States

Major areas of research interest

Field corn and small grains represent substantial acreage and contribute significant crop value to agriculture in the United States including Louisiana. Compared to other regions of the United States, the weather conditions and complex agricultural ecosystems in Louisiana create a unique environment that results in development of significant pest infestations of corn and small grain crops. Two technological revolutions in management of corn and small grain insect pests are responsible for major agro-ecological changes in modern agricultural systems in the United States, transgenic plants and seed treatments. My research efforts at the LSU AgCenter have concentrated on the use of these two technologies in managing corn and small grain insect pests. Specifically, my research program combines four main aspects:

· Risk assessment, monitoring, and management of insect resistance to transgenic Bt crops to ensure the long-term success of the crop biotechnology as an effective IPM tool;

· Assessing new Bt proteins and transgenic corn traits with novel Bt genes for managing lepidopteran corn pests;

· Evaluating novel seed treatment technologies for managing soil and seedling insect pests of corn and grain sorghum; and

· Characterizing field biology and population ecology of corn and small grain insects.

Current research projects

· Refining resistance management programs to enhance sustainable use of transgenic Bt crops;

· Characterizing inheritance, fitness costs, cross-resistance, and mechanisms of insect resistance to Bt crops;

· Risk assessment and monitoring of insect resistance to Bt crops;

· Assessing novel Bt proteins and Bt corn traits for pest management; and

· Evaluating novel insecticides for control of corn and sorghum insect pests.
