LaSalle Parish Overall Advisory Committee

March 26, 2024

Attending:

Rickey Huffman, Karen Creel, Sharla Wilbanks, Gary Wilbanks, Charlene Richard, Seth Richard, Nelda Tarver, Vinson Whatley, Kevin Wilson, Jamie Brock, Kylie Howard, Jenny Parker, Becky McLaurin, Jon Garett, Madison Willis, LaVone Boyd, & Silas Cecil

The meeting of the LaSalle Parish Overall Advisory Committee was called to order at 11:30am, Monday, March 25, 2024.

Members were thanked for their willingness to serve on the overall committee. For the working lunch, pozole rojo pork and hominy soup was served along with sliced radishes, diced onion, lime wedges, cilantro, and tortilla chips. The meal was complemented with a fresh strawberry dessert.

During the lunch Silas explained the role and purpose of the overall advisory and presented a flow chart graphic of the process.

Next the Agriculture and Natural Resource (ANR) updates and overview were presented followed by the 4-H updates. Silas explained how the AgCenter reaches clientele and the types of programs offered to are guided by the committee. He then reviewed the issues identified by both ANR and the 4-H Youth Development committee members.

Madison Willis, Nutrition and Community Health (NCH) Agent for Grant and LaSalle Parishes presented her overview of the Healthy Communities Initiative and their efforts for community partnerships.

The floor was opened for recommendations and for discussion by advisory members and the issues identified in the program committees were evaluated.

Committee members were asked to prioritize items provided by the program areas. Each member received three dots for program areas to vote on topics they deemed were most important. Results included:

4-H:

  • Basic Life Skills
  • Social Interaction
  • Making Positive Choices

ANR:

  • Impacts and hardships of last year’s drought
  • Regenerative Farming
  • (Better Advertisement of Programs Offered)

NCH:

  • Farmers Market
  • Gardens
  • Trail / Park Revitalization

The meeting was adjourned at 12:45 pm.
