Challenge Camp

February 22 - 23, 2024 (Thursday - Friday)

Join us for this year’s 4-H “Victory” Challenge Camp. Camp is slated for February 22 - 23, 2024.

Challenge Camp is geared for 4-H members in the 7th and 8th graders. The camp is designed for youth to develop and build Leadership, Communication and Teamwork Skills. This year’s adventure camp will be held at the Lions Camp in Anacoco. Registration for Challenge Camp is $70 which includes meals, lodging, and transportation. Tentative drop-off time is 12:00pm on February 22 and pickup time is 2:00pm, February 23 at the LaSalle Parish Courthouse.

So if you're ready to accept the challenge of this fun-filled educational, challenging, and service-style camp be sure to sign-up. Positions are filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Limited spots, we will create a waiting list for open spots. Register via your 4H Online account before the February 1, 2024 deadline. Applicants will be approved when payment is received! Make checks payable LaSalle 4-H with Challenge Camp in memo. Mail to LaSalle 4-H, Challenge Camp, P.O. Box 101, Jena, LA 71342.

Be sure to pack the essential camp supplies bedding, bath towel, toiletries, closed toe shoes, and warm comfortable -appropriate clothes!

Emerald Achievement & Golden Clover Awards

Due January 26, 2024

The Louisiana State 4-H Foundation recognizes 4-H youth that excel in project work and leadership.The Emerald Achievement Award and Golden Clover Award gives recognition to 4-H Club members who have shown outstanding leadership ability in their club and in their parish.

The objective of the program is to encourage project growth, a broad program of 4-H club activities over the years and the ultimate development of outstanding citizens. The recipient of the Emerald Achievement Award and Golden Clover Award can be proud of their contribution to their club and community. A club member may only win each of these awards one time. See application at 4-H meeting or contact the office for application.

Jr Leadership Camp

March 7-9, 2024 - “Leadership in Paradise”

4-H’ers 14 years of age and older. If you are interested in developing leadership, teamwork skills, communication skills, hanging out with other teens and having a great time, then come register for the 2024 Jr. Leadership Conference. The conference begins March 7 at 2:00 pm and conclude March 9 at 11:00 am. Camp Grant Walker in Pollock.

The conference features a variety of workshops focused on leadership development, communication, teamwork, service learning, and time management. A key element of the conference is its youth-driven focus. State 4-H Executive Board members from across the state plan the sessions and teach all the educational tracks. Participants will rank their choice of tracks during registration and participate in two. Tracks include: Aloha to Leadership, Cowabunga to Conflict, Speech on the Beach, and Surfing to Success. Bring a few 4-H shirts for the t-shirt exchange!

Transportation is on your own or carpool with a fellow 4-H’er.This will be a first come first served basis. Registration of $90 is due before February 5, 2024. 4-H office will begin registration via 4H Online, then 4-H’er completes online health form and media release through their online account.

Around the World: Healthy Holidays Culinary Class

‘Tis the season for a new culinary class that will bring joy and education! Class participants will learn about food safety and improve their culinary skills through active demonstrations led by Agents Madison Willis and Jennifer Duhon.
In addition, there will be nutrition education components regarding the recipe makeups. This culinary class will focus on healthy holiday recipes from around the world. There will be a total of 3 recipes: a snack, a main course, and a dessert. Students will have the opportunity to bring these holiday recipes to life through group teamwork efforts. This workshop will be held on Monday, December 18 from9:00 a.m.-Noon. Ages 9-12 . A $25 registration fee will cover the cost of educational materials, and food for the 3 recipes that will be prepared in the class and participants will take home a new spiral bound copy of the recipe book used in the class. Class is limited to 20 participants.

The deadline for registration and payment is December 11th. Please make checks payable to: LaSalle 4-H Foundation.

Livestock Updates

2024 Animal Validation & Livestock Entries

In order to exhibit your livestock, animals must be entered into your 4H Online account before possession deadline.

District Livestock Online entries are active November 30 till December 20, 2023. All entries must be paid online or to the Rapides Parish Office by January 13.

District Rabbit and Poultry entries due online January 10.

State Rabbit Show entries will be active January 3, 2024 and close February 24, 2024.

YQCA Certification

The Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) certification is replacing the Quality Assurance / Ethics program. Each year youth will login the program and complete the new curriculum in the areas of Food Safety, Animal Well-Being, and Life Skills. After competition of the course, a certificate is generated with a certification number that is entered into Fair Entry. The course is $12 payable online. The yearly course is available at www.yqcaprogram.org

LSU Premier Exhibitor Contestants

Entry forms for the LSU Premier Exhibitor contest are due to the State Livestock Show Office by January 19.All youth exhibiting animals at the LSU State Livestock Show grades 9th – 12th are eligible to participate. Monthly Photography Contest

Theme for December is “Food!”

Examples include images aimed at producing attractive photos of food for use in such items of advertisement, packaging, menus or cookbooks. Would your picture make someone want to try it? Turn in only 1 picture each month.

Write name, grade, and club on the back of a 4X6 photo and turn in to your 4-H Agent BEFORE the Last Monday of the Month! Photos may also be attached & emailed to: scecil@agcenter.lsu.edu

Seed of the Month Club

LaSalle Parish 4-H is starting a Seed of the Month Club and accepting the first 50 members who would like to participate. Each month members will receive a packet of seeds or planting material with instructions on planting, watering, growing, and harvesting. Project activity guides will also accompany the seeds that include recipes, and a wide variety of gardening education. Shooting Sports T-Shirt Design

Due January 12

Get ready to submit your ideals for this year’s parish shooting sports t-shirt design!

It’s that time of year again to submit T-Shirt design for 2023-24. Please send your design to scecil@agcenter.lsu.edu or drop off at the 4-H Office before January 12, 2024

Be sure to include a back of shirt and a front left chest design. After all your ideals have been submitted, we will send an email to shooting sports members for everyone to vote. Design needs to include our three shooting disciplines offered: Shotgun, Rifle, and Archery.

State Fashion Camp

“Fashion & Beyond Tour”--January 17

Get ready to explore the world of fashion in a fun and friendlyatmosphere for 5th - 12th grade 4-H’ers.

Join the 4-H members of the State Fashion Board at one of their venues as they travel the state bringing fashion to your fingertips.
Fashion Tour stop will include January 17 at the River of Life Church in Winnsboro. Activities begin at 10:00 am and end at 3:00 pm. Tickets for the Tour are $25 per person. Space in limited to 50 members at each venue. Participants will need to supply a sack lunch and one adult medium sided t-shirt.

At the fashion tour stop, you will get a closer look at all aspects of the fashion world from newspaper runways, color wheels, upcycling, fibers, basic sewing fundamentals, and more through 10 multiple hands on activities.

Registration closes January 5, 2024. The 4-H Office will begin your registration via your 4-H Online account. Parents will complete registration and mail registration fees (Check) to address listed upon completion.

STEM Workshop

January 22, 2024

Science, Engineering and Technology Workshop for 4-H youth in 4th - 6th grades. This hands-on workshop is ready to go with new and challenging activities that will help you dive deeper into Science, Engineering , Technology, and even a little Math.

Register now for this exciting workshop that will take place on Monday, January 22, 2024We will begin at 9:00 a.m. and last tentatively until noon in the downstairs 4-H meeting room below courthouse.
Workshop limited to the first 20 members in 4-6 Grades. Registration for the event is $10.
Deadline to register is 1/12/2024.

Summer Camp

Theme: “The Wild Adventure”

Mark your Calendar!! It’s time to plan for 4-H Summer Camp! LaSalle camp dates are May 27-30, 2024.
Members in grades 4-6 are eligible to attend 4-H camp and make great memories that will last a lifetime.
Deposits will be due April 1, 2024. Final balances due May 1, 2024. More details to come soon!

Winter Cookery Contest

Enjoyed a dish over the holidays that you would love to enter into competition? If so, enter your special recipe in the Winter Cookery Contest on Monday, January 29. Check-In 9:45 a.m. Judging at 10:00 a.m.Pre-registration is requested by 1/23/2023. Contest will be held in the Extension Meeting Room (23) at the Courthouse.

1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be given for each division and category. Enter only one dish per division.
Dishes cannot be split between divisions.

Dishes are prepared by 4-H’er the night before the cookery at home, chilled (40 Degrees F or Lower), and transported to the contest on ice, in a hard ice chest. ** 1st & 2nd Place in the Beef, Pecan & Sweet Potato qualify for Regional Cookery on April 4.

Contestants will display their dishes on table to be judged, along with recipe. Do not put your name on recipe.
Remember: prepare whole recipe and bring only half of the dish to exhibit in the contest.
Leave other half at home to enjoy with your family!
All final garnishes and entry placement for the dish should be done by contestant.

Beef Cookery
Rules: Dish must contain at least one (1) pound beef.

Pecan Cookery
Rules: Dish must contain at least one cup pecans. Categories include: Dessert and Other.

Sweet Potato Cookery
Rules: Dish must contain at least one cup fresh or canned sweet potatoes. Categories include: Dessert and Other.
