The arrows were flying and firearms blazing as team Louisiana competed at the National Shooting Sports Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska, held June 23 - 28. A total of 659 Four-H’ers from across the country competed over a four-day competition in 27 events within nine discipline for top honors.
LaSalle Parish’s Erin Wilkinson represented Louisiana 4-H at the national competition. In smallbore rifle Erin place 1st in silhouettes, and 7th in CMP and the 3P competition earning her the honors of 1st place overall individual at nationals.
Overall, Louisiana was tremendously represented at the competition. Air Pistol, Air Rifle, and Smallbore Rifle had first place overall individual rankings. Muzzleloader and Recurve Archery 4-H’ers both brought home a second place overall individuals. Shotgun, Compound Archery, and Hunting Skills earned team points for a third, fourth, and fifth place overall individual finishes, respectively. Smallbore pistol rounded out the team points with an eleventh place overall setting up Louisiana as the National 4-H Shooting Sports Champions for 2019.
These top competitors worked their way through the ranks by competing first at the regional level and then advancing onto the state competition in order to gain their spot on the Louisiana state teams. Untold hours are spent practicing by the youth and volunteer coaches in order to get them ready either for a fun and safe educational experience, or competition.
