LSU AgCenter hosts farmers market vendor training

Farmers market vendors and hopefuls gathered on April 11th for an LSU AgCenter training in St. Joseph, La.

“We selected topics based on vendor questions that we collected during the 2022 market season, and participants had the option to attend either virtually or in person at the Northeast Research Station” said Cecilia Stevens, LSU AgCenter regional food systems coordinator for Northeast Louisiana.

Dr. Achyut Adhikari, LSU AgCenter food safety specialist, presented food safety best practices for market vendors. He also shared information on upcoming training opportunities for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) certifications.

Other topics presented by AgCenter staff included cottage food laws, how to become SNAP authorized, selecting and selling seeds and transplants, egg sales and food safety, and best practices for a successful market day. Robin and Heather Richard, owners of La Bonne Vie Farm, even provided insights and tips for vendors from a farmer’s perspective.
