September 2024 Edition

Message from your 4-H Agent

Kali Zammit

Welcome to the 2024-2025 4-H year! The St. Charles Parish 4-H Youth Development Program offers various opportunities each month throughout the year to help youth spark an interest in a variety of topics and thrive as individuals. This year I encourage all youth to try something new. Sometimes we find our spark by trying something new, which often leads to a passion, and sometimes a career! I encourage you to bring these monthly newsletters home to your parents and take time to read about the many opportunities that 4-H has to offer on a parish, regional, state, and national level.

-Dr. Kali Zammit

4-H Service Section: Service-Learning Cycle

Service Learning Cycle

Service-learning is the intentional connection of service to learning a skill to address a genuine community need. In 4-H we use our hands to larger service. Participating in a service-learning project is a great way to help your community. Here are the steps to the service-learning cycle:
  • Needs Assessment – Investigate and decide on a genuine need in our community to address
  • Community Ownership – Brainstorm potential partners that can help address this need.
  • Planning & Preparation – Plan all the details related to conducting your service-learning project.
  • Meaningful Service – Conduct a meaningful service project that addresses the need you identified.
  • Evaluation – Evaluate your project. What worked? What didn’t work? What could you have done better? What did you learn? How did you help your community?
  • Celebration – Take time to celebrate your success.
  • New Application – Apply what you learned to your next project.

Note: Throughout the project, include youth voice, problem solving, project monitoring, and reflection. Contact your 4-H Agent for more service-learning resources.
