4-H FAQ

This section is dedicated to 4-H frequently asked questions and answers from your 4-H Agent.

What do you do at LOST Camp, and where do I find information? 4-H LOST Camp is a 4-day, 3-night adventure for current 7th – 8th grade 4-H members. During this overnight event, campers enjoy participating in hands-on educational tracks, recreation rotations, and free time with 4-H friends from throughout the state. Applications are posted in your school 4-H club’s Google Classroom and our LSU AgCenter website. For further information, contact Dr. Kali Zammit.
How is LOST Camp different from 4-H Camp? In addition to the grade difference, LOST Camp differs from 4-H Camp as it provides campers with more choices to develop independence. Campers select more tracks in which to participate. Also, each parish sends campers for this 1-week of LOST Camp, which means that they will have less members from each parish but more parishes camping together.

LEGOs and Leadership Lessons

This year our monthly 4-H lessons will focus on two of our 4-H mission mandates: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Civic Engagement (Leadership). At your club meeting or at home, try the activities below to learn more.

Lego Challenge Activity: Building Bridges

For the STEM activity each month, you will have a LEGO activity challenge that will accompany an optional story. You may use LEGOs or comparable blocks or items for each challenge. These lessons are adapted from the 4-H LEGO Engineering Club: Enchanted Builds (Vol. 3) from Mississippi State Extension.
Monthly LEGO Lesson: Building Bridges; Optional Video: What Makes Bridges So Strong? LEGO Challenge: Using approximately 100 LEGOs or less, yarn, and tape, create a bridge using one of the 3 designs that you think will be the strongest. Reflection: Why did you choose this design? What did you learn about yourself while building this bridge?

4-H Teamwork Activity: Collaboration

Collaboration is the process of shared creation… collectively creating something new that could not have been created by individual users. This month we will focus on collaboration. The group will be given a rope with several knots tied along the rope. Participants will grab above or below each knot with one hand. Then, without removing his/her hand, the group will try to untie each knot in the rope.
Reflection: How did the group plan for this challenge? Are there any “knots” in your group of friends/family that need to be untangled? What skills can you use from this game to untangle your knots?
