4-H Family Highlight

Dr. Kali Zammit - St. Charles Parish 4-H Agent

Congratulations on graduating with your Ph.D. from LSU in December!

What do you love most about 4-H?

I love that 4-H has something for everyone! Even when I was a 4-H member, 4-H encouraged me to venture out of my comfort zone and try new things. 4-H fosters friendships, independence, generosity, and much more! I also like that 4-H provides me (and so many youth and adults) with an opportunity to travel to different places and meet different people. Being involved in 4-H is a fun, optimal learning experience that challenges me to be my best self. I love to “learn by doing” life with 4-H!

LEGOs and Leadership Lessons

This year our monthly 4-H lessons will focus on two of our 4-H mission mandates: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Civic Engagement (Leadership). At your club meeting or at home, try the activities below to learn more.

Lego Challenge Activity: Measuring

For the STEM activity each month, you will have a LEGO activity challenge that will accompany an optional story. You may use LEGOs or comparable blocks or items for each challenge. These lessons are adapted from the 4-H LEGO Engineering Club: Enchanted Builds (Vol. 3) from Mississippi State Extension. January LEGO Lesson: Zipline; Optional Video: Ziplining to School LEGO Challenge: Using approximately 50 LEGOs or less of the same type, a piece of yarn, tape, and a LEGO minifigure, create a basket for your minifigure and zipline your minifigure from a higher elevation to a lower elevation without letting your minifigure fall. Reflection: How do you adjust your slope if the minifigure falls?

4-H Teamwork Activity: Public Speaking and Demonstrations

Did you know that people typically use 50% body language, 45% tone of voice, and only 5% verbal speech to understand what someone is saying? This month we will focus on understanding nonverbal communication. The group will be divided by pairs. One person will reenact a scenario, while the other person perceives the message. Reverse roles for each set of cards. Reflection: Discussing body language and message for each round. How did the message and body language make the person feel?
