This year we would like to encourage all 4-H members to participate in at least one culinary arts contest. These contests are intended to help our 4-H members grow in their cooking experience and skill level while enjoying quality time with families who assist them with the safety rules and sharing of traditional family recipes. This year the 4-H Culinary Arts contest will be split into 5 submission dates. Members will bring 2 servings of their dish on the designated day and times to the St. Charles Parish LSU AgCenter Office. Members will also need to complete the 4-H Culinary Arts Registration Form by the submission date to be considered for judging. All rules are posted on the online registration form.
4-H members will be allowed to bring 2 servings of their dish in a sealed, non-returnable container on the date specified between 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. at the St. Charles Parish LSU AgCenter Office, which is located at 453 Spruce Street in Norco, La.
See online form for specific rules and details for the event.
*Note: To receive an award or recognition for any parish 4-H contest, the 4-H member must be registered and approved through 4-H Online.

This year our monthly 4-H lessons will focus on two of our 4-H mission mandates: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and Civic Engagement (Leadership). At your club meeting or at home, try the activities below to learn more.
For the STEM activity each month, you will have a LEGO activity
challenge that will accompany an optional story. You may use
LEGOs or comparable blocks or items for each challenge. These
lessons are adapted from the 4-H LEGO Engineering Club:
Enchanted Builds (Vol. 3) from Mississippi State Extension.
November/December LEGO Lesson: Measuring
Optional Video: Jim and the Beanstalk
LEGO Challenge: Using approximately 100 LEGOs or less of the same type, a piece of paper, and a ruler, draw your hand or foot and measure it with the ruler and then with LEGOs. Then measure the Olaf LEGO figure. How many LEGOs does it take per inch?
Reflection: What are some things that you may measure in your life? Why is it important to be accurate when measuring?
Are you not a fan of public speaking? Chances are that you have
already faced a public speaking situation at school or with
friends. Here are three tips to remember when you get nervous
before giving a speech: (1) Communication is an essential skill for
success in any field; (2) Communication includes speaking and
listening; and (3) Practice makes perfect!
November/December Leadership Activity: Divide the group into 4-5 students each. Each group gets a grab
bag with different items in each bag. One by one, each
student will pick an item from the bag, introduce
themselves, and talk about the item for 30 seconds.
Group members will take turns speaking and keeping
time.
Reflection: How did you feel speaking in front of a group?
What did you learn by participating in this activity?
