4-H Club Meeting Lesson:

Cooperative Communication

Cooperation is important because it allows people and groups to work together to achieve a common goal or derive mutual benefits. Cooperation exists at many levels and takes place between individuals and organizations as well as between states and countries. Cooperation allows participants to exchange valuable information that helps both sides improve their knowledge bases and work in a time- and resource-efficient manner.

Members will practice cooperation with their team this month as they navigate an activity that will only be successful through full cooperation.

Grades Eligible to Participate: 9th-12th

To be held at: Broussard Bunkhouse/

Rockefeller Refuge

Intracoastal City/Grand Chenier, LA

Marsh Maneuvers is a five-day coastal ecology camp for high schools 4-H members. During their stay, youth have the opportunity to be immersed in the marsh while riding in an airboat, swimming in mud to plant marsh grass, and catching their own dinner! These sometimes challenging but rewarding experiences also carve in their minds the wonder, complexity, value, and productivity of Louisiana’s coastal environments. Participants experience the biological diversity and complexity of this environment by examining the life cycles and habitat requirements of wetland animals and plants. They evaluate environmental quality through water testing and examining the hydrology of the watershed. Exercises in natural resource management help to develop an appreciation for the difficulty in balancing social needs and environmental consequences. Some of the activities used to illustrate these concepts include fishing, crabbing, cast netting, wildlife observation, seafood processing, and policy debates.
