Cameron Parish 4-H Shooting Sports Program

Cameron Parish Shooting Sports will schedule training and practice dates along with fundraising ideas at this meeting. Also, the club has guns available for anyone to shoot at practice or 4-H competitions. It is very important that you and your parents attend. Our program needs volunteers to assist with practice times, so that we can get things up and running in preparation for Parish, Regional, and State competitions.

Objective of Program

Youth members will learn life skills in decision making, responsibility, and communication through shooting sports activities. In addition, youth will gain an understanding of the importance of safety when using firearms and hunting equipment along with marksmanship skills. The program emphasizes gun safety and teaches youth about hunting ethics and wildlife management tips.

Age Requirement

To join the Cameron Parish Shooting Sports club youth must join a 4-H club at their local school each year. Youth must be between 9 and 18 years old as of January 1st of the current school year. Youth must join the club at their school or if a school does not have a club, they can join the Cameron Member at Large Club.

Club Activity Days

The shooting sports club meets at least once a month from late September thru May. Meetings and practices are usually scheduled on weekends. At the end of the year, a parish contest is held in April. 4-Hers can also show their skills at the Regional Shooting Sports competition in March to qualify for the State Shoot in April. Seniors can qualify for National competition. Youth will have access to firearms and bows that were purchased by the club to use for practice or competition in all disciplines.

Instructors teach safety lessons and 4-Hers are broken into 4 areas in which they would like to concentrate their skills. The five disciplines offered to youth in Cameron Parish are: Rifle (BB gun, Air Rifle), Archery, (recurve and compound), Shotgun

Advanced Shotgun

We have a volunteer designated to schedule practices at different ranges. Know that these shooters will be asked to supply their own shells and equipment.

Volunteers Instructors

The shooting sports program is run strictly by volunteer support. All volunteers go through overnight chaperone training. Instructors go through a certification process to teach youth on the parish level. We are always looking for volunteers to be instructors or assistants who can help teach. To be an instructor or assistant it requires at least one weekend a month of your time and you must love working with youth.

For more information on joining 4-H and the shooting sports program or becoming a volunteer please call (337) 905-1318 or email bpousson@agcenter.lsu.edu.

Cameron Parish Shooting Club Rules

All 4-H’ers must complete a minimum of 8 hours of instruction during the year to participate in the State 4-H Contest.

To compete on a team, 4-H’ers must meet these criteria.

  1. Participate/shoot in at 4 least monthly club days and the parish contest. Each practice will count for 2 hours of instruction. Shotgun – Senior’s practice will consist of shooting at least 2 rounds. If you shoot 1 round that is 1 hour of instruction. Any shooter not meeting the 8 hours of instruction will not be allowed to shoot at the Regional Competition.
  2. 4-H’ers scores will be kept by instructors at each monthly activity day and their top 5 scores throughout the year will count.

The 4-H’ers with the greatest percentage of points in the three areas will have first choice to be on the teams. This does not keep any individual 4-H’er from competing at the regional competition.

Rules for 2022 - 2023

Open to all shotguns of 12 gauge or smaller, using shot loads not exceeding one and one-eighth (1 1/8) ounces. Shot size 7 ½ to 9. Shoot management reserves the right to inspect ammunition before shooters enter field.

Practice Fee - There will be no cost for practice.

Shell Bags - Shell bags are MANDATORY. We have shell bags available for purchase. All members (Juniors and Seniors) will not be able to practice without a shell belt. You will not be allowed to put shells in your pockets or carry them in the box.
