Work Location: This position will be located at the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station in Crowley, Louisiana.

Position Description: This is a full-time 12-month, tenure-track position (90% research/10% extension) focused on rice production systems in Louisiana. The position will have a 20% appointment in the School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences (SPESS) and will be expected to fully participate in the school’s graduate program serving as major advisor and on advisory committees for Ph.D. and M.S. students. The successful candidate must work closely with the Extension Rice Production Specialist and interact with commodity and agricultural industry partners to identify, develop, and implement critical research projects. Collaboration with research and extension faculty within Louisiana, as well as with national experts, on issues of shared interest and importance is expected. Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives will be expected. Results of research should be published in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific/technical publications. Extramural funding to support the activities of the position should be solicited from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop applied and mission-oriented research programs at the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station focused on agronomic issues important to the rice industry. Potential focus areas could include, but are not limited to, fertility management, alternative production systems, water usage and management, and rotational crop management. Including in these efforts, he/she will be expected to work collaboratively with faculty in the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station and the School of Plant, Environmental, and Soil Sciences. in addressing emerging industry needs and coordinating rice variety testing and characterization. Research, extension, and outreach responsibilities will include north and south Louisiana. He/she will develop, refine, and disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations and provide current content to a variety of extension media, including but not limited to: commodity web pages, social media, agricultural trade magazines, and traditional extension methods (newsletters, blogs, oral delivery, and formal extension publications). Additional duties include participation in professional and technical meetings and other outreach in conjunction with the Extension Rice Production Specialist as is necessary to inform producers, industry personnel, and other research scientists of project activities and findings. This faculty member will report to the Resident Coordinator of the H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station.

Qualification Requirements: A Ph.D. in agronomy, soil science, or other closely related agricultural field of study is required. Documented training in field crops research and agronomic production practices is critical to the success of the position. Applicants should have demonstrated effective oral, written and electronic communication skills necessary for presentations to a variety of audiences. Evidence of successful grantsmanship, research activity, and stakeholder interaction will be important considerations. The ability to multi-task and work in a team environment with research and extension faculty representing other disciplines is critical.
