Work Location: This position will be located in the Northwest Region of the LSU AgCenter. The Northwest Region includes two research stations and 12 parish extension offices. Exact domicile will be determined at time of hire. This position will serve as the statewide point of contact for poultry production, with the primary area of the state to be served being the Northwest Region, including commercial poultry producing parishes. Poultry production continues to be the largest animal agricultural industry in Louisiana, the majority of which is concentrated in the north central area of the state and is second only to forestry in total value for all agricultural commodities.
Position Description: The successful applicant will plan and implement, an educational program related to poultry production and management. These responsibilities will involve developing and maintaining direct relationships with poultry industry clientele, including poultry company personnel and poultry producers, conducting demonstrations, workshops, and educational meetings in concrete with industry needs, disseminating information and recommendations related to poultry production and management, and responding to industry requests and program needs. The applicant will also participate in the management and data collection at the broiler production facility at the Hill Farm Research Station. This demonstration/educational facility is designed to demonstrate and monitor broiler growth performance under various in-house conditions related to brooding, feeding, watering, ventilation, and other equipment operation and management as well as for litter and mortality management procedures. Poultry environmental issues may also be addressed. The successful applicant must continue professional development and remain current with research and industry trends and their application to programming. The individual will be expected to work cooperatively with other AgCenter faculty at both the local and state levels and to perform other tasks that may be assigned by the supervisor. The successful applicant will report administratively to the Northwest Regional Director.
Qualification Requirements: A B.S. degree in animal sciences or related agricultural field is required, M.S. or PhD degree is desirable. Experience working in the poultry industry is desirable. The applicant must have an undergraduate degree with an overall grade-point average of at least 2.5 (all GPA requirements based on a 4.0 system) and a 3.0 for graduate work attempted. The applicant must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of public relations and the ability to cope with change are highly desirable characteristics. Ability to work with and through others is essential as is the ability to function with minimum supervision.
Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Conditions of Employment: A personal automobile and appropriate insurance coverage is required (travel allowance provided). Satisfactory completion of two specific graduate level extension courses is generally required in the first two years of employment.
Additionally, any extension faculty member hired without a master’s degree is required to complete a master’s degree in an approved program of study within five years of employment.
