(This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position through 12/31/2023. Continuation will be dependent on funding, job performance, and continued need for the appointment.)
Location: H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station, LSU AgCenter, Crowley, Louisiana.
Duties and Responsibilities: Responsibility of working under the direction of the project leader, in a team setting, doing research on rice breeding and genetics. The duties will include managing DNA marker lab activities, including leaf sampling, management of tissue inventory, coordinating outsourced genotyping jobs, and overseeing marker-assisted selection jobs. These activities will involve planting, tracking, sampling, and organizing of 10,000s of leaf and seed samples. Additional duties include conducting and coordinating large scale grain quality analysis of using Seedcount, milling, and Rapid Visco Analyzer equipment. The Research Associate will coordinate marker lab and greenhouse activities and assist with sampling in the field. This position will assist with other breeding and marker lab activities throughout the year, including operating KASP SNPline genotyping equipment. Some activities may occasionally require working outside the standard workday to complete time sensitive tasks and occasional travel may be necessary.
Qualification Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in a plant science or agriculture field, general studies, logistics, management, or related field from an accredited college or university is required. Other degrees may be accepted with experience or education related to the job duties. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn software programs required. The position requires excellent organization skills and attention to the detail. Experience in inventory management and demonstrated experience in sample preparation and high-throughput research are required. Applicants must have experience in using standard laboratory equipment and procedures, including DNA extraction and PCR analysis. Experience conducting laboratory research involving KASP DNA markers using the LGC SNPLine equipment and conducting grain quality research using Seedcount, Rapid Visco Analzyer, and milling equipment is highly desired. Ability to work in the field and greenhouse under hot and humid conditions.
