Rank and Nature of Position: Assistant Professor; 12-month tenure track appointment. The position is 85% extension and 15% research. The individual will be a faculty member of the LSU AgCenter Central Region. This position will be the primary statewide livestock extension specialist for LSU AgCenter focusing on beef cattle production.
Work Location: This position will be domiciled at the Dean Lee Research and Extension Center, Alexandria, LA, with statewide livestock extension responsibilities and research responsibilities conducted at the Dean Lee Research Station, Hill Farm Research Station, and/or other research stations and collaborating farms/ranches.
Job Description: This is a 12-month tenure track position that will have responsibilities for supporting Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service (LCES) animal science programs and implementing statewide and regional initiatives. This position will be responsible for developing and implementing a statewide extension program focusing on beef cattle production in Louisiana. This position will also coordinate with LCES animal science agents in assigned regions to deliver programming for commercial operations, and 4H livestock activities. The position is responsible for working with advisory committees and livestock agents within regions and across the state to identify stakeholder needs, develop programs that respond to those needs, and to assess program impact on stakeholders. The position will support stakeholder visits, demonstrations, workshops, and educational meetings across the state. The position will contribute to and disseminate LSU AgCenter recommendations through written, oral, video, website, and social media communications. The successful candidate for this position will be required to prepare a strategic plan for the development and execution of a statewide educational program emphasizing livestock production interests and needs and building and strengthening all levels of the Louisiana Master Cattleman Programs.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a research program focused on beef cattle production systems.
Qualification Requirements: Formal participation in multi-disciplinary, regional, or national research initiatives will be expected. Results of research should be published in peer-reviewed journals and other scientific/technical publications. Extramural funding to support the research and extension program should be pursued from federal and state agencies, commodity (state and national) research boards, and agro-industries. The candidate is also expected to participate in graduate student education through the LSU School of Animal Sciences. Participation in regional, departmental and campus committees is expected as a faculty member in a land grant university. Continued education development through association with professional societies and attendance at national and international conferences is expected. The incumbent is expected to perform other tasks that may be assigned by supervisor(s) and work cooperatively with other LSU AgCenter faculty.
Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related field is required. Experience in extension programming which addresses needs of beef cattle producers is highly desirable. Good interpersonal skills and leadership abilities are required for working effectively with diverse professional and lay audiences and cooperators.The candidate must be able to communicate effectively (orally and in writing) with diverse audiences including scientific peers, clientele, and agribusiness representatives. Development of scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles and educational curricula/programs for appropriate publications/journals and other outlets, including LSU AgCenter numbered publications, is expected for professional development.
