Green Savage (Savage Wonder X Canfreezer) was developed as part of Dr. J.C. Miller’s campaign to release stringless, prolific, straight podded pole beans for home and commercial use. This tan seeded variety yielded highest alongside Canfreezer in spring and fall trials from 1947-1955.Seed was acquired from Seed Saver’s Exchange and grown out for seed increase and evaluation in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Living up to the historical data, Green Savage yielded highest among Canfreezer and Savage Wonder in 2021 and was therefore regrown in 2023 and 2024 to determine consistent results. Again, it yielded highest among similar varieties both years, producing effortlessly and vigorously through the heat of spring and summer. In 2024, vines produced a heavy crop in early summer then a light crop mid-late summer. Pods are more flattened than Canfreezer and Savage Wonder, stringless, and easy to snap. No major pests or diseases were observed. Best for fresh use, but harvested pods were frozen for later use and held up well. Overall, Green Savage has proven to be the best LSU developed pole bean for home use.60 Days to maturity.
