Welcome to the Shade Garden of the Hammond Research Station! Most of the beds in this garden offer full to part shade, with a few exceptions on the north side. Shade-tolerant plants play an important role in Louisiana gardens, helping to brighten and cover the shady bare ground under old live oaks or beneath a thick stand of pine trees. In addition, many plants recommended for full sun in other parts of the country require protection from our brutal afternoon summer sun to thrive in Louisiana, so these beds play an important role in determining alternate adaptability for the Gulf South.
