4-H Fall Fest is the first big 4-H contest day of the school year. The contests, starting times, and locations are listed below. Refer to the chart below to find out when to report for each contest.

Parents, you may bring lawn chairs to set out on the grounds while the contests are taking place. You are expected to stay with your child throughout the day. Since there are several events being held at one time, the 4-H Agents and volunteers will be busy conducting the contests and cannot supervise youth. We hope you will enjoy this family-oriented event. Rules for each contest are included in this packet.

General Rules and Regulations:

All contests are open to 4-H members in St. Martin Parish. These 4-H’ers will be allowed to enter any/all contests that they are eligible for, as long as time permits.

For all contests, contestants will compete as an individual and against one another within the specific categories. Cloverbud members (3rd graders) will have their own division in each contest (except the Pet Show) and will receive a participation ribbon for each contest that they participate in.

Registration for each contest will be held at the location listed above during the times listed above.

**Awards will be placed with your project at the conclusion of the contests at their locations where they were dropped off.

The decision of the judges is final in each contest.

Note To Parents

You can assist your child in preparing for the contests at Fall Fest but Remember it is a contest for Youth. Any entry that appears to have received too much parental help will be dropped a placing or two. It’s very tempting to over-assist, just remember - Children Learn Best Through Doing!

4-H Member & Parent Contest Behavior Expectations:

To ensure that we All strive to create a pleasant experience at St. Martin Parish 4-H sponsored contests, workshops, events, and activities, a list of expectations for 4-H members and parents has been created. (Adapted from: Pennsylvania 4-H Youth Development Program Behavioral Expectations) A goal of the St. Martin Parish 4-H Youth Development Program is to provide opportunities for children and youth to develop character and learn life skills. In order to assure that the 4-H Youth Development Program of St. Martin Parish provides positive environments for all individuals to learn and grow, a list of expectations has been developed. The expectations of good behavior come from the 6 pillars of character which include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

4-H contest, workshop, and/or event participants and any adults attending with them agree to abide by the expectations of behavior listed below:

I will be trustworthy. I will be worthy of trust, honor, and confidence. I will be a model of integrity by doing the right thing even when the cost is high. I will be honest in all my activities. The Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Now that you have picked the perfect pumpkin, it’s time to get it all dressed up for the season!

Bring your pumpkin to Fall Fest on October 25, 2025, with an entry form.

The Great Pumpkin Decorating Contest will be held in the Breaux Bridge High School, Boys Gym. (1015 Breaux Bridge Senior High Road, Breaux Bridge, LA 70517)

Saturday, October 25th

Registration times are from 8:00am to 9:00am
Judging begins at 9:15am

The Rules

  1. The main part of each entry must be a Real pumpkin or a member of the pumpkin family. (Pumpkin must not be fake.)
  2. Each entry must have an entry form turned in with entry, form can be found on page 11. You must decide prior to the contest which category you are entering.
  3. There will be a Cloverbud Division (3rd graders), a Junior Division for (4th-6th graders), and a Senior Division for (7th-12th graders) for each category. Cloverbud members will receive a participation ribbon for each pumpkin they exhibit.
  4. Skill level should reflect the youth’s grade and age. For example: What is a 4th grader capable of creating?
  5. Pumpkins may NOT be carved or hollowed out.
  6. Pumpkins entered and objects & materials used to decorate pumpkins may not be claimed until after the contest.
  7. 4-H members may have only one (1) pumpkin entry in each category.
  8. Objects, paper, and materials of any kind may be pinned or glued to pumpkins. Participants may also draw or paint on their entries or dress them up. Again, do not carve or hollow out your pumpkin.
  9. No electrical device may be used as part of any entry.
  10. Pumpkins must be picked up after judging is complete on contest day. Pumpkins that are not picked up by end of contest day can be picked up at the 4-H Office the following week.

Judging Categories

  • Animal Pumpkin - Lions, tigers, bears—oh my! Make your decorated pumpkin look like an animal.
  • Louisiana Commodity Pumpkin - Louisiana grows and produces lots of foods. Make your pumpkin look like a locally grown Louisiana commodity. Need ideas? Visit www.lsuagcenter.com for information.
  • Celebrity Look-a-Like Pumpkin - There’s a celebrity in the building!!!! Be sure to include the celebrity’s name on entry.
  • Team Spirit Pumpkin - What team do you root for? Show us your team love by decorating your pumpkin with your favorite team’s colors, mascots, and insignias.

Some Helpful Tips:

  • Keep your pumpkin in good shape.
  • Choose a firm pumpkin, with no blemishes, and make sure the stem is firmly attached.
  • First wash your pumpkin under running water.
  • Store your pumpkin in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place.

Some decorating tips:

  • Use acrylic paint if you wish to paint your pumpkin.
  • Use a glue gun or straight pins to attach decorations to your pumpkin.
  • Make sure that you give your pumpkin time to dry.
  • Think about transporting your pumpkin.

St. Martin 4-H ROCKS Contest

Thanks to a Facebook group called “St. Martin Parish ROCKS!”, you probably know about this craze…. Painting rocks and placing them around the parish so others can find them. We have seen some of your creations and we want to give you the opportunity to show off your skills in this contest. After the contest is over, we hope that you will place your rock(s) somewhere in the parish for others to enjoy.

Bring your painted rock(s) to Fall Fest in a Ziploc-style bag with the entry form..

  1. 4-H members may have only one (1) rock entry in each category.
  2. There will be a Cloverbud Division (3rd graders), a Junior Division for (4th-6th graders) and a Senior Division for (7th-12th graders) for each category. Cloverbud members will receive a participation ribbon for each rock that they exhibit.
  3. You may use any size rock for this contest, but it needs to fit inside of a Ziplock-type bag. You may add objects to your painted rock (wiggly eyes, rhinestones, etc.) if you want.

Judging Categories

  • 4-H Rocks - Promote 4-H with your painted rock. Put the 4-H clover on it or a message about 4-H! Show us how fun 4-H is.
  • Animal/Pet/Insect/Fish Rocks - Use your creativity. Make your painted rock look like an animal, a pet, an insect, or a fish.
  • Holiday Rocks - Which holiday is your favorite? Show us by entering a painted rock with a holiday theme.

3.Only 4”x6” photos will be accepted for this contest. Pictures should Not be in a frame - only the printed photo.

Rules

  1. Exhibitors must be a St. Martin 4-H’er, but it is not necessary to be enrolled in the pet project.
  2. All pets must be registered by 9:15 am on the day of the contest. Registration will be located in the Livestock Barn at Breaux Bridge High 8:45 am-9:15 am. Show starts promptly at 9:30 am.
  3. Each 4-H member may enter only one pet in the pet show; however, that pet may be entered in up to 2 categories.
  4. All pets must be restrained while at the show (leash, cage, box, fishbowl, etc.)
  5. The pet must be a living, breathing animal. All pets must be healthy in order to participate.
  6. Parents must remain at the Pet Show to chaperone their 4-H’er and pets.
  7. Do Not Bring Aggressive Pets! All pets must be under the 4-H member’s control at all times. Only bring animals that you can easily control because your pet will be around other animals and people. Note: If a pet bites your child, yourself, another person, or another pet—and they seek medical attention at either a doctor’s office or a hospital—the medical provider must report the bite to the St. Martin Parish Animal Control. Consequently, animal control has the obligation to impound and quarantine the animal for up to 10 days for rabies observation, regardless of whether the animal is current on its rabies vaccinations.
  8. Any form of abuse applied to a pet may lead to disqualification.
  9. Exhibitors will be responsible for cleaning up after their pets.
  10. Ribbons will be awarded in each category, in each division.
  11. Livestock (beef, dairy, swine, sheep, goats, rabbits, horses, and poultry) and captive wild animals are Not allowed in this competition.

There is an Area Cookery Contest for these divisions.There is Not an Area Cookery Contest for this “Just for Fun” divisions.

Cookery Contest Basic Rules:

  1. The dish must be made the night before, refrigerated overnight, and transported to the contest on ice in an ice chest.
  2. The dish must be prepared by the 4-H member. (This is a contest for 4-H’ers, not parents.)
  3. All dishes must be completely cooked.
  4. You may enter one dish in each division.
  5. Judging will begin promptly at 9:15 am.
  6. The entire dish will not be required for this contest. A sample of two servings of the dish is requested for judging. Please submit 2 servings on/in a disposable container (i.e. paper plate will be great!)
  7. Only bring the dish, we will provide all serving utensils and plates.
  8. For food safety reasons, dishes will be discarded after the contest. NO exhibits will be returned, so please use disposable plates or containers for exhibiting your dish.
  9. Bring two (2) typed copies of the recipe with each dish you turn into the contest. Type your recipe on plain, white 8 ½ x 11” paper. On the Back of each recipe include full name, school, grade, email address, and/or telephone number.
  10. The 1st– 5thplace winners will receive a ribbon.
  11. Cloverbud members will only receive a participation ribbon for the Family Recipes Contest – their entry will not be judged.
Recipes for all categories (except Bento Box, Edible Art & Family Recipes) will be scored using the scoring formula below:

Cookery Contest Divisions Open to 4th -12th Grade 4-H’ers only

Bento Box Division

Open to 4th-12th grade 4-H members

A bento lunch is a compact, balanced, visually appealing meal packed in a box. “Bento” is Japanese for packed lunch or meal. Each competitor will create a lunch to be eaten at school by a student ages 9 to 12. The beverage to accompany the meal will be water (do not need to include).

Bring a prepared healthy box or Bento lunch to the contest. It should be representative of “MyPlate” recommendations which can be found at www.myplate.gov.

Each competitor will transport their Healthy Box or “Bento” Lunch to the contest packed in a portable, lock-top, and leak proof container, chilled and on ice. The competitor will present the box to the judges for sampling. The food should be exhibited in a disposable serving container, not to exceed 18” to allow adequate space for all entries. You will be asked to remove items not directly related to the dish, such as placemats, flower arrangements, figurines, trays, footed chafing dishes, soup tureens, etc. Non-edible items are not to be used as garnish. No serving utensils will be allowed.

Bento Box Scoring Factors: Meal - (100 Points)

Theme – suitable for age group, creative (5 points)

Container – portable, reusable, lock-top, and leak proof (5 points) Preparation Techniques – neat, interesting, unique (5 points) Appearance – colorful, inviting (5 points)

Texture - chewiness, juiciness, variety (5 points) Taste – pleasing, variety (5 points)

Affordable - $5.00 or less per serving; include cost on recipe (5 points) Nutrition & Recipe – (65 points)

Ground Beef Division

  • Open to 4th-12th grade 4-H members
  • All recipes MUST include at least ONE POUND (1 lb.) Ground Beef

Low Calorie Category

  • Must include at least one pound (1 lb.) of ground beef in recipe
  • Each serving must be less than 300 calories
  • Must state total calories of the dish and calories per serving on recipe (in the bottom right hand corner would be a good place to put the information

Quick & Easy Category

  • Must include at least one pound (1 lb.) of ground beef in recipe
  • Entire dish must be prepared (start to finish) in less than an hour
  • On recipe, list time for each step (Example: If the dish (from start to finish) takes 45 minutes to prepare, after each step list the amount of time it took to complete. Example: Step 1: Cook the ground beef in a medium sized pan. (20 minutes)

One Dish Meal Category

  • Must include at least one pound (1 lb.) of ground beef in recipe
  • Dish must include ingredients from 3 of the 5 food groups according to
  • MyPlate (Grains, Proteins, Dairy, Vegetables, and Fruits)
  • Must indicate on recipe which food group for the 3 ingredients. (Example: ½ cup rice – Grains Group; 2 cups ground meat- Protein Group; 1 cup cheese- Dairy Group; ½ cup bell pepper- Vegetable Group; 1 cup orange juice-Fruit Group)

Rice Division

  • Open to 4th-12thgrade 4-H members
  • Recipes MUST include at least 1 cup of cooked rice

Main Dish Category

  • The dish must contain at least 1 cup of cooked rice.
  • Rice Krispie cereal and wild rice are not acceptable

Side Dish Category

  • The dish must contain at least 1 cup of cooked rice.
  • Rice Krispie cereal and wild rice are not acceptable

Dessert Category

  • The dish must contain at least 1 cup of cooked rice.
  • Rice Krispie cereal and wild rice are not acceptable

Seafood Division

  • Open to 4th-12thgrade 4-H members
  • All recipes Must include at least One Cup Seafood.
  • Seafood must be fresh, frozen, pasteurized, or dried (not canned).
  • There can be No Raw Seafood in the Final Dish!

Crab Category

  • Must include at least one cup of crab in the recipe
  • Surimi, an artificial crab made from fish, Cannot be used.
  • You can have a second type of seafood, but it must not be more than ½ of the amount of crab in recipe. For example: ½ cup shrimp, 1 cup crab meat

Crawfish Category

  • Must include at least one cup of crawfish in the recipe
  • You can have a second type of seafood, but it must not be more than ½ of the amount of crawfish in the recipe. For example: ½ cup shrimp, 1 cup crawfish

Shrimp Category

  • Must include at least one cup of shrimp in the recipe
  • You can have a second type of seafood, but it must not be more than ½ of the amount of shrimp in recipe. For example: ¾ cup crab, 1 ½ cup chopped shrimp

Oyster Category

  • Must include at least one cup of oysters in the recipe
  • You can have a second type of seafood, but it must not be more than ½ of the amount of oysters in recipe. For example: ½ cup shrimp, 1 cup oysters

Fish and Other Seafood Category

  • Must include at least one cup of fish or other seafood in the recipe
  • Must be Louisiana Seafood. Some examples are: tuna, catfish, snapper, alligator, turtle, frog legs, garfish, speckled trout, mackerel, shark, squid, bowfin and Louisiana clams.
  • Surimi, an artificial crab made from fish, Cannot be used.

Sugar Division

  • Open to 4th-12th grade 4-H members
  • Recipe MUST include at least 1 cup of sugar

Baked Items Category

  • Must include at least 1 cup of sugar in recipe
  • Includes any recipe that requires baking such as breads, cakes, pies, cookies, etc.
  • No raw eggs in the final product

Non-Baked Items Category

  • Must include at least 1 cup of sugar in recipe.
  • Includes any recipe that DOES NOT require baking such as candies, icebox pies, ice cream, etc.) No homemade jams, jellies or preserves.
  • No part of the dessert can be baked in this category
  • No raw eggs in the final product

(Note: If the dish you enter requires you to bake a crust, it should be entered in the “Baked Items Category” of the contest)

Just For Fun Contest Division

  • Open to 3rd-12th grade 4-H’ers
  • Edible Art Open to 3rd-12th grade 4-H members

1.) Get creative and make art out of your favorite foods.

2.) Use your imagination. Please use discretion in your assortment of ingredients

3.) All ingredients and decorations must be edible

4.) Entries will be judged on looks alone

5.) Submit one example for judging.

6.) Your masterpiece is NOT to be longer than 18"

7.) Please include an 8 ½ x 11” paper which includes the recipe, ingredients, name, grade, school, and email address.

8.) Edible Art entries may be picked up at the conclusion of the contest. All edible art entries that are not picked up at the
conclusion of the contest will be thrown away.

9.) There will be a Cloverbud Division (3rd graders), a Junior Division for 4th-6th graders, and a Senior Division for 7th-12th graders.

* Cloverbud members will receive a participation ribbon for their Edible Art exhibit.

*The edible art entries DO NOT have to be refrigerated or transported on ice because it is being judged on appearance and will not be tasted by judges.

Family Recipe Contest

Open to 3rd-12thgrade 4-H members

Does your family have a recipe that is used many times? We want you to highlight your family’s history and traditions by entering your family recipe into this contest. You can get help from mom, dad, grandparents, uncle/aunt, cousin, siblings, etc.

1.) Recipe can include any ingredient. All ingredients and decorations must be edible.

2.) Include a short story (paragraph) about the history of the recipe. For example: who came up with the recipe, when is it cooked, secret ingredients, etc.

3.) Cloverbud (3rd Graders) taking part in the Family Recipe Contest will only receive a participation certificate. Their entries will not be judged.

4.) Entries from 4th-12th graders will be judged on taste, appearance, food safety, recipe evaluation, and story of family history.

5.) Follow all rules for the cookery contest.

6.) Please include an 8 ½ x 11” paper which includes the recipe, ingredients, history of recipe, name, grade, school, and email address.

7.) Entry must be made the night before, refrigerated, and transported on ice in an ice chest to contest.

8.) The entire dish will not be required for this contest. A sample of two servings of the dish is requested for judging. Please submit 2 servings on/in a disposable container (i.e. paper plate will be great!).

Only bring the dish, we will provide all serving utensils and plates.
