SUMMARY: United Way Golf Tournament (500 adults), parenting to pregnant mothers at Options for Independence Recovery Center (3 mothers and 1 father), Smart Portions ppt. at Options for Independence Recovery Center ( 18 adults), Romeville Senior Center Nutrition class on Tips for Eating Healthy When Eating Out (20 adults), Teen Town Hall Summit (300 youths and 90 adults), Welcome Senior Center Nutrition class Meeting Your Nutritional Needs as You Age (16 adults), St. John Health Unit WIC Clients (18 adults and 26 children), Healthy Nutrition class at Homer Joseph Center (3 adults), Head Start October Fest (100 adults and 197 children). Presented to 766 adults and 523 adults for a total of 1289 participants reached for the month of October.
6 adult site (Options for Independence Recovery Center, Romeville Senior Center, Welcome Senior Center, St. John Health Unit WIC Clients, Homer Joseph Center and Head Start) and 3 youth sites (Teen Town Hall Summit, St. John Health Unit WIC Clients (youth), Head Start). 10 lessons were taught: Smart Portions ppt., Breastfeeding Your Baby, Tips for Eating Healthy When Eating Out, Meeting Your Nutritional Needs as You Age, Smart Portions Eating Healthy, Fruits, Vegetables, Proteins, Grains and Dairy lessons serving a total of 1289 participants (766 adults and 523 youth).

Relevance – Obesity has led to a virtual epidemic of diabetes, and its associated complications, such as kidney failure, blindness and early heart disease. Obesity may also cause joint problems and depression.
Response – The social aspects of obesity, youngsters being teased and shunned, an inability to participate well in sports is also important as it affects the overall health and well-being of an individual. The parents were given the opportunity to see and feel 5 lbs. of fat.
Results – The parents were shocked and some felt embarrassed that their children and themselves were carrying around such disgusting fat. It got the parents to thinking of changing the foods they eat and incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diets.
