The LSU AgCenter participated in the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Community Health & Wellness Fair on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at New Wine Fellowship Community Center from 10:00 – 2:00 p.m. in LaPlace, LA.
The purpose of the health & wellness fair was to bring awareness to the community family health risk. The information was given to encourage the community to monitor their health and communicate signs of changes to their healthcare provider. Practicing healthy habits of checking blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol can help reduce health issues in the future. Reducing your blood pressure and other health issues can be maintained by limiting your salt intake, eating healthy, exercising and following a dietary program called the DASH diet. This program eliminates salt and adds spices and herbs to your diet.
Some of the vendors that participated included: LSU AgCenter, Walgreens, St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. John the Baptist Health & Human Services Department, SCLHSA Substance Abuse and Mental Health, Dr. Nia Thompson, OBGYN, St. Charles Community Center Health Care, Diabetes Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and St. John The Baptist Fire & Rescue.
The vendors checked blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar. Having your blood pressure monitored on a regular basis could eliminate high blood pressure in the future; having cholesterol checked could eliminate strokes and heart attaches in the future and having sugar checked could eliminate having diabetes in the future. Taking care of your body and knowing warning signs are very important because there is only one you.
Remember KNOWLEDGE is POWER and lack of KNOWLEDGE is being POWERLESS.
