The LSU AgCenter, SU AgCenter, Knights of Peter Claver & Ladies Auxiliary Council & Court #135 hosted a Health & Wellness Fair at St. James Catholic Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015 from 10:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the St. James Catholic Church Hall.
The purpose of the Health & Wellness Fair was to increase health awareness and disease prevention, increase awareness of local health services and resources, motivate participants to make positive health behavior changes and teach self-care practices.
The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that 59 million (31 percent) of adults age 20 and older are considered obese and approximately 15 percent of children and teens ages 6 – 19 are overweight. Childhood overweight has reached epidemic proportions, and the number of overweight children is increasing on a daily basis.
A thank you goes out to all the agencies that participated in the Health & Wellness Fair: Access Health Louisiana, Vacherie Personal Care, South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority, Interim LSU Hospital Diabetes Education, AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, SU AgCenter, Options for Independence Recovery Center and LSU AgCenter. A special thanks goes out to the volunteers: Knights of Peter Claver & Ladies Auxiliary Council & Court #135, Marie Lewis, Gretchen Ketchen, Lucretia Nicholas, Melissa Laurent Smith, Lawrence Ambrose and Rod Steib, because without their time and energy this could not have been accomplished.
