The St. John Parish Next 4-H Food Star contest was held on Nov. 20, 2010, and it was a success. Thank you to everyone that participated and to the parents and volunteers for coming out to support our area 4-H’ers. Below you will find a list of all of our head chefs!

Every month, sewing club leader Katrina Levron hosts a sewing workshop at the LaPlace Library. The workshops have been a huge success!! Students have had the opportunity to learn the basics of their machines, made sewing organizers, tote bags no sew pillows, and winter caps. If you are interested in joining the sewing club, please join us at our next workshop, which is scheduled for Dec. 20, 2010, from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.

The December 2010 Sewing Workshop project will be making Personal Care Kit For Charity. Items needed are: two washcloths and a travel size personal care item.

4-Her’s, parents, leaders and agents all came together for a very enjoyable event on Nov. 13, 2010. Participants were treated to jambalaya and ice cream for lunch and were able to participate in activities such as rock climbing, fishing and face painting. There were also raffle tickets that were pulled throughout the event. The most anticipated prizes for the raffle were an autographed baseball and football!! Boy were those 4-Her’s excited to win those prizes. Join us next year for this annual event.
Several area students participated in the district challenge camp that was held at Tickfaw State Park on Nov. 2-4, 2010. At Challenge Camp students participated in team building activities such as the Tickfaw Challenge, boat building, canoeing and much more!! Joshua Davis was even awarded the outstanding camper award!!
Fourth graders throughout the St. John Parish were treated to an extravaganza like no other!! They were able to participate in the area Ag Day on Oct. 28, 2010, at the Fast Food Farm in Gramercy, La. Here they learned more about where the food we eat comes from.
1) Learned how to make butter.
2) Learned about bugs and their life cycles and how they affect crops.
3) Were pictured in front of the tractor which was brought to the event by Sunshine Tractor of Laplace, La.
4) Hadad the opportunity to make a veggie pal using pumpkins and an array of vegetables.
These are only a few of the learning stations that the students visited during their visit.
Thank you to all the volunteers including the youth volunteers that came out to make this event a huge success!! A big thank you to Mrs. Lynette Perrin, Mrs. Patti Rodrigue, and Mrs. Dennie Hymel for organizing this event. We would also like to thank Superintendent Dr. Courtney Millet for making this event possible to the youth in our public school system
Come one, come all, join us for a game of ball!! The Hornets will be playing the Chicago Bulls at this game and there are several opportunities for you to get involved. Please see the flyer on the link below for more game day activities.
If you are interested in attending the 4-H Night with the Hornets, please get your ticket orders into the 4-H office by Dec. 17, 2010. Tickets are $25 each. Please include a check or money order made out to the St. John 4-H Foundation along with your order form. You can mail your form to the 4-H office or give it to your school 4-H leader.
If you are in need of bus transportation to this event please make note of that on your order form. There will be an additional charge of $3 for bus transportation. If we are unable to fill the bus, we will not have a bus. Pick up locations will be announced at a later date.
Calling all future leaders!!
If you are 14 years old or older and interested in learning to be a good leader I am looking for you. I need a delegation of eight students to send to Junior Leadership Conference, which is scheduled for March 18-20, 2011, at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, La.
The cost to attend is $65, but if you act now we will cover half of this cost. That’s right! You can attend this once in a lifetime event for only $30!! If you are interested, please complete the form attached below and return it to the office with a check or money order made out to the St. John 4-H Foundation. The first eight to register are guaranteed a place! Registration is due with payment by Jan. 26, 2011.
Do you have a four-legged friend? We welcome them all dogs, cats, lizards and even fish!!
If you have a pet, you don’t want to miss this event. The annual 4-H Pet Show is scheduled for Feb. 12, 2011, at the Hwy. 51 Park next to the library. The only requirements are that your pet must be on a leash or in a cage and you must turn in a registration form.
Pre-registration will guarantee you and your pet a treat bag. Pre-registration is due on Feb. 1, 2011. Your entry can be mailed, faxed, e-mailed to the 4-H office or given to your school 4-H club leader. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the top animals at the event. Hope to see you there.
This event will be re-scheduled in the event of bad weather.
Attention all livestock exhibitors!! This is only a reminder. The District Livestock Show is scheduled for Feb. 2-4, 2011 in Covington and the State Show is scheduled for Feb. 12-19, 2011. If you need additional copies of the show schedules, list of hotels, or rules please contact Mrs. Aimee’ at the 4-H office or by email. Everyone should have received one at the swine workshop that was held in November.
The time has arrived for St. John’s all day sewing camp. Camp will be held at the LaPlace Library on Feb. 19, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. See attached flyer for more details. If you are interested in taking part in this grand event, please fill out the attached form and mail it back to the office with a check or money order made out to “St. John 4-H Foundation.” Deadline for submitting registration form is Feb. 11, 2011.

Alicia is being featured as this month’s 4-H’er for her outstanding participation in events throughout the parish. Alicia has been in 4-H since the 2nd grade as a cloverbud. Alicia has participated in all sewing workshops, she is a swine exhibitor in the livestock program, she participated in Next 4-H Food Star and was awarded with several first place awards and overall awards, attended 4-H camp and several other events. Keep up the good work, Alicia.

Be sure you stand behind Andre when he is in the lead! Andre has displayed exceptional leadership skills since becoming a Jr. Leader. Andre can be found assisting Mrs. Aimee and other leaders at just about every event hosted. “I never have to ask Andre for help, because he always offers.” Way to set the bar, Andre!!

Hoops and Clovers
Date: Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011.
Game: Hornets versus the Chicago Bulls, 7:00 p.m.
Location: New Orleans Hornets Arena, New Orleans, La.
Purpose of Event:
? To provide an opportunity for 4-H’ers to experience an event outside of their home base.
? To provide 4-H’ers the opportunity to interact with others from around the state.
? To increase recognition of the 4-H program within the state.
Member opportunities to promote:
1. Ball girl/boy – two – Must be 8th-12th grade 4-H member – two free tickets for both 4-H members
selected. Age requirement: 13 years of age by Jan. 1, 2011. Have you ever wanted to sit on
the bench with an NBA team? You can have that opportunity if you submit an essay on the topic:
“Being a Good Citizen through Community Service”. Essays must consist of 150 words or less and
parishes must send their essays to Terril Faul by Feb. 1, 2011. Parishes may send all of their
essays to the state 4-H office; the two winners will each receive two free tickets to the game.
2. Captain’s Program – one 4-H member – no age requirement – two free tickets for 4-H member
selected. One 4-H member will have the opportunity to participate in the referee meeting on-court, act
as an honorary captain and present the game ball for the evening. Submit your essay of 150 words
or less on the topic: “4-H: Why Do I Belong”. Send your essays to Terril Faul by Feb. 1, 2011. The
winner will receive two free tickets to the game.
3. National Anthem – one 4-H member – no age requirement – two free tickets for 4-H member
selected. No age requirement, send video or audio tape to Tanya Walker by Jan. 17, 2011, at the
state 4-H office. There will be an opportunity for an individual to sing the National Anthem at the Hornets
game on Feb. 12, 2011, and the winner will receive two free tickets to the game.
4. Basketball Buddies – 10 – no age requirement.
Basketball Buddies allows 10 4-H members to stand in front of the Hornets basketball team
during the performance of the National Anthem. 4-H members must be elementary students not over 5
feet 9 inches. Send one name to Terril Faul by Feb. 1, 2011.
5. Half time presentation – Two 4-H members per parish – no age requirement.
Each parish will select two 4-H members to represent their parish for the halftime recognition
of 4-H. The 4-H members selected will go on the court while a promo about 4-H is read to the
audience. This will be a great opportunity to experience being on a basketball court and promote
4-H at the same time. Send the names of two 4-H members representing your parish by
Feb. 1, 2011, to Terril Faul.
Selections for Number 6 – 11 will be through a random drawing at the state 4-H office. Each parish must submit a list of 25 4-H members or less to Terril Faul at the state 4-H office by Feb, 1, 2011. Names will be divided by regions and drawings made for the selection of 4-H members to participate in High Five, Tunnel Groups, Honeybee Photo, Player Photo, and Baseline Bees. In other words, all five regions will be represented in each of the opportunities. Instructions will be sent to agents on meeting times and places for the game on each of these activities following the selection of 4-H members.
6. High five team – 10 – no age requirement.
Ten 4-H members will have an opportunity to be on the court prior to the game
and High Five the Hornets players as they are introduced on the court.
7. Honeybee photo – 25 – no age requirement.
Twenty-five 4-H members will have an opportunity for a group photo with the Honeybees
8. Player photo – 25 – no age requirement.
Another 25 4-H members will have an opportunity for a group photo with one of the Hornets
9. Tunnel group (Hornets) – 25 – no age requirement.
10. Tunnel Group (Chicago Bulls) – 25 – no age requirement.
The two Tunnel Groups of 25 4-H members each can High Five the players as they run
through the tunnel leading to the court.
11. Baseline Bees – 10 – no age requirement
Baseline Bees allows 10 4-H members to watch the Hornet players up close warm up prior to
