Third graders throughout St. John Parish attended an extravaganza like no other! On Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011, they participated in the area Ag Day at the Fast Food Farm located in Gramercy, Louisiana. Here the students received valuable information on where the foods they eat every day come from. The third graders were engaged in hands on activities that were both educational and tasty. One activity was a workshop on soil layers. The demonstration included different types of cereals which represented each layer of soil. The students learned about bedrock, subsoil, topsoil, organic matter, and the process of percolation, which is the absorption of water through the earth’s surface. After the students constructed the layers, they were given the opportunity to eat them. This was only one of the many stations the students enjoyed on their visit.
Market hogs will be validated between Nov. 28, 2011 and Dec. 3, 2011, with Dec. 3, 2011, being the absolute last day to validate any market hogs for the LSU AgCenter Livestock Shows.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, the St. John Parish 4-H office hosted the 4-H Cookery Contest at the Andouille Festival. The 4-H Cookery Contest was designed for the education and enhancement of 4-H members, allowing them to place emphasis on specific agricultural commodities such as beef, seafood, poultry, eggs, and sugar. In addition, 4-H members were given the opportunity to compete in the Ambassador Competition which required participants to present illustrated talks on any of the listed agricultural commodities. The 4-H Cookery Contest also gave 4-H’ers the opportunity to become aware of the Louisiana seafood industry, acquire knowledge of the nutritional and economic values of beef, identify cooking principals of poultry meats and poultry meat products, acquire knowledge on the uses and values of eggs, and become aware of the economic values of the Louisiana sugar industry.
