Over 400 4-H'ers and interested adults gathered recently for the annual St. James Parish 4-H Achievement Day at St. James High School on May 1st.  Awards and recognition were given to 4-H individuals and 4-H clubs throughout the day, as well as recognizing adults who volunteer their time to work in the 4-H Program.

The day began with the presentation of the Six Pillars of Character by St. James High 4-H'ers Clifford Knight, Colby Knight, Milisha Jackson, Trey Gros, Hunter Kraemer and Len Dennis.  A parade of banners from each of the 4-H clubs of the parish followed, then the presentation of flags by St. James High 4-H'ers - Courtney Moody and TeOshia Gibson.  St. James High 4-H'er Devin King explained the Six Pillars of Character as the pillars were brought up to the front of the gym.  Paulina 4-H'er, Hannah Berthelot, led the group in the National Anthem.  Serving as master of ceremonies was St. James High 4-H Vice-President, Brandi Keller.  Pledges and prayer were led by the St. James High club members - Jamal Cureau, TeOshia Gibson and Claude Louis.

4-H Agent Ken Guidry then took over for special introductions and presentation of special awards.  Attorney Jackie McCreary Coppenex, a former 4-H club member for St. James Parish made a special Law Day talk and asked youth to get involved in the judicial process - including one day being a lawyer, which was her lifelong dream.

Helping to present awards were St. James Parish School Board Representative Debra Chaisson, District 5 Councilman Charles Ketchens, Representative Ed Price's Administrative Aid Ms. Brown, Regional 4-H Specialist Renee Castro and our horticulturist with the LSU AgCenter, Craig Roussel.

Mrs. Rachael Schexnayder was then introduced as the 2012 4-H Hall of Fame Award Recipient.  Mrs. Schexnayder has served as volunteer 4-H Leader at both St. James Parish high schools, the foods project club leader and as statewide leader in the fashion and clothing area.

Clubs also participated in either a 4-H Song or Yell and club were given the opportunity to present a talent number to entertain the group.

A list of awards are attached.
