On Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, the Springville Classy Gardeners, a group of youth from the Springville Alternative School, officially started their school garden. In collaboration with the LSU AgCenter’s 4-H and Family Nutrition Program, the school kicked off the first school garden in the Red River Parish. Using large containers, the group of approximately 20 students planted purple cabbage, green cabbage, Swiss chard, radishes, carrots, turnips, lettuce and mustard greens. LSU AgCenter agents Vicky Chesser, Joshua Salley and Cindy Smith taught important concepts such as healthy cooking and eating, when to plant certain crops, how to care for crops, as well as a variety of planning, teamwork and leadership skills. The youth are aspiring to build a better school environment, while learning math, science and social studies concepts.
