This spring has been a fun time for the departments of the Red River Parish Courthouse. The LSU AgCenter hosted a "mater" growing contest which incorporated seven different groups.
Red River 4-H'ers and Volunteers came out on Saturday, April 12, 2014 to “Painting the Park Party” to help revitalize the Town of Coushatta Park. 4-H'ers and Volunteers painted the playground equipment and cleaned up the park.

This year at the 2013 Northwest District Livestock show, we had five youth participate in showing their livestock project. The youth have to show at the district level in order to qualify to be come to the state show in Gonzales La. Red River Jr. Livestock club had all five youth qualify all of their animals that were brought to the district show.
The Red River 4-H Livestock Quiz Bowl Team went to the State Fair of Louisiana this year and participated in the Livestock Quiz Bowl competition.
To celebrate the hard work of The Red River Parish Jr. Leaders, LSU AgCenter employees, Susan Wilson, Master Gardner, Red River inmates and other community volunteers a “Block Party” was held on Friday, June 8 at the Red River Community garden site.
Three area 4-Her’s participated in the 2nd Annual Mike McConathy’s Purple Wave Shot Gun Tournament on October 13th at the Natchitoches Shooting Range. Jared Gay, Lewis Lawson, and Michael Arnold shot 100 rounds of Sporting Clays. These youth placed 1st in the Youth Team division, Jared Gay placed 1st, Lewis Lawson placed 2nd, and Michael Arnold placed 3rd as individuals.

On Saturday, February 25th Jared Gay, Austin Knotts, Mikey Jones, Brent Swayze, Michael Arnold, and Lewis Lawson traveled to Lake Charles to the Crying Eagle Invitational Shoot. They competed in the Advance Shotgun which consisted of shooting 25 rounds of skeet, trap, and 5-stand against 105 contestants.
The Red River Shooters shot in their regional competition. On Friday, March 16, 2011 William Bailey competed in the Northern Regional Modified Trap competition at The Long-Range Alley Gun Club in Grand Cane. Consisting of 50 rounds, Bailey shot skeet competing against others in the area.
4-H University 2011: number 11 was the magic number of 4-H’ers from Red River Parish that attended the 97th annual 4-H University the week of June 21 – 24, 2011, in Baton Rouge, La. Results of their participation can be found here.
Youth from across the state are enjoying a great time at 4-H Camp at Grant Walker 4-H Educational Center located in Pollack, La. Red River Parish 4-H members recently participated in several educational tracks during June 2011.
The seventh annual Camp Roughin’ It was held April 25 – 26, 2011, at Gum Springs National Park in Winnfield, La. This camp educates 4-H’ers about ways to develop, manage, and further utilize natural resources (forestry, aquatics and wildlife) in a fashion that will insure a healthy and clean environment for years to come.

Five 4-H’ers from Red River Parish qualified with nine dishes to participate in the Area Commodity Cookery Contest in DeSoto Parish on April 28, 2011, at the DeSoto Parish Cooperative Extension Office.
On Friday March 25, 2011, Red River Parish children beautified the Jeannette Lawson Family Center with plants and flowers.
The Red River Junior Leaders along with citizens of Red River Parishh met April 30, 2011, at the Fairgrounds for a parish-wide cleanup for the Going Green on the Red River Festival.
The weekend of March 26-27 proved to be an exciting time for the Red River Parish 4-H Junior and Senior Shooters, with several competitors advancing to state. On Saturday, March 26, the seniors shot 150 rounds of skeet at the Shreveport Gun Club.
A $10,000 donation toward a community garden is a welcome addition for local residents through a donation from Encana Oil and Gas (USA), Inc. The community and youth will soon have access to programs that promote healthy living and active lifestyles.
Most kids started off their spring break this year by sleeping in late, going to the lake, or going on vacation somewhere. This wasn’t the case however with the Red River Parish 4-H Jr. Livestock Club members.
Eight members of the Red River Parish 4-H club conducted a general fundraiser with a cake sale at the Red River Livestock auction barn on March 2, 2011. All four parish project clubs were represented.
Springville Educational Center is the home of the “Springville Classy Gardeners” where 20 youth received their level one Junior Master Gardener certificates.The Educational Center was the site for a fall container garden that was created for the youth to have hands-on learning experiences that will provide life-long skills and promote healthy eating.
Springville Classy Gardeners from the Springville Alternative School started the first school garden in Red River Parish.
The 2011 Northwest District Livestock Show was held on Jan. 29, 2011, at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds in Shreveport. The Red River Parish Jr. Livestock Club was represented by seven exhibitors at this year’s show.
