Livingston Volunteers for Family & Community Recognized
On Tuesday, May 5 during the Louisiana Extension Association of Family & Consumer Sciences (LEAFCS) Annual Convention held at Hotel Mazarin in New Orleans, the Livingston Volunteers for Family & Community (LVFC) Club was awarded the Friend of LEAFCS Award. The club, some 72 strong, was nominated by Layne Langley, Livingston Area Nutrition Agent with the LSU AgCenter.
These 72 Livingston Parish citizens are part of four LVFC Clubs in the parish- Albany Club, Can Do’s, Lady Bugs, and Port Vincent Club. They not only meet monthly but also conduct educational service projects in Livingston Parish. The projects they conduct and programs they deliver strengthen the work of the Family & Consumer Sciences Agents in the state. The four LVFC clubs actively participate in environmental, family life, literacy, and international programs.
Activities for the four LVFC Clubs this year alone include: constructing pillowcases for the children’s hospital, volunteering at a school once a month, sewing 17 prayer blankets for cancer patients, collecting clothes for Veterans who are trying to find jobs and are in need of good clothes, working at The Livingston Parish Fair and registering entries, collecting coats, sweaters, gloves, and hats for the homeless in Baton Rouge, and conducting a baby shower for an orphanage and using this event as a recruiting tool. The Livingston Volunteers for Family and Community also conduct raffles and other events to raise money for the Greater Baton Rouge Cancer Services. This year, over $1,750 was donated by the clubs. During their Christmas Program, each member donated toys that were donated to the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office Christmas Crusade. The group also collects items for the Blue Star Moms Program which sends care packages to servicemen overseas. They are to be commended for their work with the book bag program that supplies books to Head Start students. For the Veteran’s home, members created Valentine cards. The LVFC also award a $250 scholarship to a graduating senior. Furthermore, they support the 4-H Program in Livingston Parish by serving as judges for the foods, clothing, and Achievement Day contests. Last year, members took part in professional development activities including attending the State Convention in Houma, participating in the Area 1 Fun Day, and participating in the LVFC Mini College.
As you can see, these members epitomize the mission of LVFC “ to strengthen individuals, families, and communities through: education, leadership, and action”. It is because of their service to the profession they were awarded the 2015 Friend of LEAFCS.
